Did anyone just see the guy in the crowd make a one handed catch whilst on his mobile phone?!!! bow

English selectors will be checking if there is any UK heritage in that bloke for sure.

You have to concede that Australia have taken the level of the one-day game to new heights in the last five years - in all areas of the game but especially their initial approach at the start of the innings - witness England's 58-2 from their first 15 overs and Australia's 101-0. Their whole persona when batting is not to feel under the cosh at all and to take the game to the opposition - one which other countries must heed. Mind you, it helps when you probably have the best one-day bowling attack as well ... and those big Aussies grounds help - lots of space to clout the ball.

It's also comforing to know if you're in the Aussie top three that there are four or more equally competent one-day batters still in the hutch - that just breeds confidence and a freedom to play some strokes. You don't get many of their team swinging across the line of straight deliveries either, fine if maybe the ball is not on the stumps but they're not often out lbw. Most of their shots are good cricket shots not out anbd out slogs.

Someone is going to have to come up with some good tactics and then implement them if we aren't to see Australia win every game iof this series, then complete a clean sweep in the World Cup Final ... which is McGrath's dream I should think (and quiet prediction).

Also helps when you are bowled absolute dross for 15 overs! If it wasn't for Monty & co adding some half decent respect to the middle of the innings that would have been a new type of limited overs game... lets call it 50-20.

actually , without being arrogant, a game of England 50 overs versus Aus 30 overs would be a good game to watch boxedin

Said to the missus England were 40-50 runs shy on that wicket at that ground, Australia were never pressed in the game and now that KP is out there is not much hope of slogging it out with us.

I do worry about the Kiwis though as they are absolute crap as a team until they play the Aussies which seems to make them play above their fighting weight. I think they will just doff their hats to the England team as they are second-hand Poms anyway and reflect back to the "old country" , they don't seem to have as much fight when they play England .

So my prediction is that the Aussies will lose one to England and beat the Kiwis in all of them which will leave England in the finals for the moneypot ... not being cynical rolleyes but England will drag in more bums on seats than the Kiwis

I thought the Aussies played in first gear tonight, they need some tough games , I would hate to be an England supporter, it must get depressing

With all due respect rolleyes I disagree. The Kiwis, particularly under Fleming, have consistently punched above their weight and have played well as a team, rather than a bunch of individuals. They have also generally performed pretty well against England. They may not have any superstars but over the years players like Astle, Cairns, Fleming and Macmillan have shown real grit and determination. Of all the teams we play I like them the best because I think they are real triers and make the most of their abilities and play for each other.

Do you Aussies see Aus v NZ at cricket the same way us English see England v Scotland at football?

Mind you, England v New Zealand at football might be close ...

definitely,, but even more so when it comes to rugby, but we are crap at rugby atm so we will defer to cricket for the time being.

All our good rugby players are playing league not union so it will be some years before we get back on equal terms with the All Blacks

at least all our summer sportsmen are concentrated into cricket, or at least most of us agree on cricket in summer as our favoured sport

sorry but they are absolutely useless and you will see just how bad when they come up against us, there is not ONE of their team that would make it into ours whereas Freddie and maybe KP would get a look in.

Fleming is a good leader and Cairns many years ago was a danger but they are all spent forces and can only lift against us but they have no talent and little skill, Hadlee was their last great player

I reckon that if the soap dodgers lose 1st uppa to the sheep shaggers, they will just head straight for the airport and head back here to the land of the grey. They will all claim "mental duress" and follow in the example set by Mr Stresscothic.

can you blame them ??!!

if they lose to the sheep-shaggers they'll be scared to play against pre-schoolers next ...... let's hope for England's sake they draw a group that contains Bangladesh, Zimbabwe, and the Ivory Coast for the world cup or they may never see round two

And as usual for the cup, back the first team to play the Aussies as they will be hot favs and go down in a screaming heap and be the embarrassment for a week but will have pocketed a nice sum on the side from the bookies .... cynic ? me ?

England have called up Ravinder Bopara to replace Pietersen. Bopara averaged a very average 38 in county cricket last year and 42 in 50 over cricket.

Mal Loye, who hits it miles and would seemingly be the most appropriate replacement for big hitting KP, averaged 54 in domestic 1 day cricket last year and is in the world cup 30.

So why have the selectors overlooked the most likely man to do the business and gone for Bopara?

Ah and hold the back page. Our world cup prospects just improved. The selectors have announced the provisonal world cup squad and it includes a recall for Ashley Giles. rolleyes

I hope this "back page" you speak of is from The Sun dated 23rd March 2003 before the last world cup......but fear that it isn't.

For my sins I'm off to the world cup to see England play Australia in Antigua. This is on the assumption they can qualify from a group including Kenya and Canada!!!! Fingers crossed!
