I think certain people will suffer in the coming years, Mark Coleman was clearly off his tits on juice whilst competing in Pride, since returning to the UFC he's gone from being a 240lb colossus of muscle to a slightly anemic looking 205er. A lot of the Pride fighters were clearly on steroids for most of their careers, Wandy being one of them, even in interviews you can see he's just not a crazy and roided up as he was, he used to be a furious wrecking machine with unlimited cardio, now he's gassing in the first round against guys like rich franklin and just generally being a shadow of his former self. Same with Cro Cop and many others. Thats not to say all of the fighters were on roids, Fedor seems to be carrying on much as he was and Shogun is too now that his knees are fixed properly.

Theres some debate as to whether lesnars recent problems have been steroid and painkiller abuse related from his wwe days. He's clearly not as ripped these days as he was whilst doing the pantomime fighting.

heres coleman after his second loss to Fedor, lots of swearing! Its pretty funny how calm fedor is, the guys a cyborg!

Steroids, their benefits and hazards are an area that have really inetersted me for years, mainly because it's so hard to know for sure who is on what.

So, other than (relative) body sizes and success rates over the years, in different cards, and a few high profile 'found outs' just how much evidence/certainty is there of who in MMA has been on them? Has anybody read or heard of any fighter admitting to or being caught on any particular drug?

How many fighters in the UFC does anyone think are still risking this given the testing (for what its worth)?

Re. Mark Coleman - he features quite a bit in the Mark Kerr documentary "The Smashing Machine" and given the amount of needles Kerr shook out of his draws I'd be amazed if he wasn't using performance enhancers as well as the pain killers that nearly do for him mid way through the film. If you haven't seen this film it is absolutely brilliant - real warts and all fly-on-the-wall stuff with a good mix of training, fights and reflective/personal stuff.

gonna give it a watch later

I also doubt many are on steroids anymore, HGH is more likely, there's not much than can detect it. Or some kind of new designer steroid we dont know about yet.
Very true, if the semi pros/ pros are using it im pretty sure the higher ranking pros are. The scary thing is they also use insulin amongst others... fk that.
I know a few low ranking pros (show fodder) who live on GH and test.

Im sure its rife in other sports too.
There's been lots of stuff in the bodybuilding press over the past few years about how rife insulin manipulation is and how dodgy the possible effects - needs to be done so precisely to avoid screwing up major systems rather badly! And different from individual to individual and from time to time, so how well do fighters persuaded to give it a try control this.

In bodybuilding several deaths, 'he's not feeling to well', retirements and no-shows have been put down to this.

I'm still trying to work out (had asked about this before) just what benefits HGH would bring to an athlete unless (as in bodybuilding) size was what counts, which would seem odd for most MMA guys. From what I'd read/ been told it didn't seem to offer as much benefit to strength, endurance etc. as steroid based drugs so give most fighters need to drop weight I wonder if it's a false hope? Anyone know much about this?

A bit late to be a heads up but I've just remembered that on Bravo right now is the Strikeforce Miami show which includes the debut of Herschel Walker (at 47 !) and an ex WWE wrestler Bobby Lashley, who they apparently had trouble finding an opponent daft enough to fight him, for as he's supposed to be so strong.

Mind you, on MMA Live this week Kenny Florian and Rashad Evans were a bit critical of his 'standup' which Evans said was like his drunken uncle at a party, throws a cross and falls down!

Don't look if you're squeamish though as Frank Shamrock is commentating and has on display the most gruesome set of 'teeth' ever seen - WTF has he had done to them?!

Edited to add that Lashley's oppo is Wes Sims, so obviously they found someone who qualifies as an idiot irrespective of whether Lashley is fearsome or not. Plus, there is also Nick Diaz v Zaramskis and Robbie Lawler v Melvin Manhoef which should be good

Just looking at the guys they have in the audience makes you realise how strong and in depth the Strikeforce roster has gotten lately.

A great athlete - I remember watching him in NFL 20 odd years ago - but no place in MMA despite the commentators' fawning.

Trouble is he'll be encouraged enough to go on until he meets a true mixed martial artist and gets embarrassed/hurt.

Addiction is a shame.

all that fight did was make strikeforce look stupid and unprofessional, Im fairly certain I could have beaten walker, the guy he was fighting was totally st at everything, apparently he was BJJ guy?! Maybe a yellow belt from a cereal box if he's lucky.
