Looking for suggestions with regards to starting clays. My son (17) has expressed an interest following a short time with small bore target shooting that clays and possibly game over time would be more fun/interesting.
He's looked on various websites for local clubs and there's three at Bisley, all with different membership costs. My feeling is that there may be better value looking a bit further out - Surrey/Hampshire/Berkshire
What suggestions would you have?

Claying is huge fun, but my god its dear these days...
When I shot regularly, we were buying Gamebore Blue Diamond 8s for about £125/1000 -today they are £240/1000
Clays have also gone up...
Its almost priced me out of the sport tbf, which is a shame.

Costs have risen a lot, even in just the past few years.
It won't now be a sport I'll continue to be doing in retirement sadly.

How much roughly (in time) would you get out of 1000 clays though? Lets say 2 per minute, so that's 500 minutes worth or 8.3 hrs, which is £29 per hour.Claying is huge fun, but my god its dear these days...

Yeah the vast majority of clubs are time served + min number of visits if you don't have an FAC already.
Also, there's going to be 3/4 months backlog of applications being sent in at once, so the processing time is going to be extended as well, and in the case of some of the 'slower' forces, we could see some very long grant times.Evoluzione said:

IE, Farm clays 100 ESP, could take a few hours if busy and group of you...Then you might decide to have another card...then stop for a pie n pint in the way home.....
OR
I go solo midweek to an automatic clayground - 100 clays can be 30 minutes if you ger excited !
I was a member of Broomhills, now Atkins Grant & Lang, I used to do 100 ESP and then spend an hour on the air rifle range.....
I really do enhoy Claying but as regular activity, it does hoover some serious cash up....

Thanks for the warning!!
I would say, for him to use the Bisley facilities to have a few lessons and find out if he likes it or adapts to it (it can be a frustrating shooting sport at first if you have spent many years shooting at stationary paper targets ) He can always look for a club later on if he thinks it is something he wants to get into deeper.
Just seen the latest shenanigans from the EU.
There is a move afoot to ban the use of lead over wetlands under the guise of environmental impact. Whilst this is a possibly laudable aim there is a little sting in the tail. It's not just the fact that the EU have decreed that this is a "Yes" or "No" vote with no abstention options, nor the fact that they just happened to time the vote for the holiday season and any countries that don't attend the vote will be deemed to have voted "Yes".
No the sting in the tail is that the ban is intended to be extended to cover all shooting, even range shooting. This then means that whole swathes of firearms become unusable, anyone with a muzzle loader for example, oh and I can't think of any .22LR ammo that isn't lead either.
Yes, I am aware of Brexit, but do you trust our Politicians or Civil Servants not to jump on the bandwagon sweeping this under the Teflon green blanket that makes any counter argument equivalent to questioning Holy Writ? Plus, I don't want to see those still in the EU being permitted to keep their guns but just not being able to buy ammunition or use home cast bullets. It seems to me like a cunning ploy to take legal guns away from owners and avoid paying any compensation.

This has been afoot for sometime re lead free. The scheming regarding timing is no surprise from the bent eurocrats. There is a move afoot to ban the use of lead over wetlands under the guise of environmental impact. However, Spain, France and the Eastern Europe countries will ignore the ruling [if successful] for the next ten years, as there are many more hunters over there [along with businesses] that would be affected. UK will bend over and implement as a true wimp, as per other rules ie no smoking in restaurants etc. The UK appears to want to get rid of FAC weapons, which is a shame.
