Offside at the ruck before the try. Prevented SA going left.

I can't remember the last time I saw a penalty try and a yellow card for the defending team. It probably should happen but never does.

Unfortunate at times but you simply cannot kick the ball away with 20 seconds left on the clock and with 13 men.

Just thick rugby

Why, oh why, did the 9 kick long with 30 secs left?

Utterly superb performance by Wales let down by a brainfart.
Yep. Just recycle it 2 times then kick off pitch.

I thought the same, but apparently it's "the law"

8.3 A penalty try is awarded between the goal posts if foul play by the opposing team prevents a probable try from being scored, or scored in a more advantageous position. A player guilty of this must be cautioned and temporarily suspended or sent off. No conversion is attempted.

Ironically the clip they use on world rugby doesn't show the yellow/red card being shown as it stops too soon.

So the Southern hemisphere hasn't got too much to worry about in the next World Cup?

If you see a penalty try, there is nearly always a yellow card now. Taking down the maul, in at the side or deliberate knock-on. Seen alot in the Prem all season.

This.

I couldn’t believe it.

Similarly, in the England game, why, with your 8 in the bin, do you scrum with your tighthead unsupported by a flanker? Predictably, they got destroyed and gave away a penalty??

positives?

Henry Arundell scored a cracking try in a cameo and got a penalty in 2 touches which is a good return
Freddie Steward continuing to be impressive
Fazlet being quite sharp

negs...

Fazlet leaving his kicking shoes behind
Smith not quite on it (IMO)
Marchent (IMO) a little anonymous
last quarter we just seemed to give up
Smith getting picked for England is probably the worst thing to have happened to him!

Not only has he not been great for England, he seems to have lost a little of his purely instinctive edge playing for Quins as well. frown

Perhaps I should have said the Southern hemisphere hasn't got too much to worry about from any team not coached by Shaun Edwards?

probably EJ's insistence on zero mistakes - the problem being playing naturally (a la Smith, Cips, Campese etc) does ,by it's very unpredictable, nature mean that mistakes will be made. Arundel is another one - instinct player and picked because of that and EJ's giving it "...he's someone we can coach..." and from what I can see the England idea of coaching is to go for regimented play by numbers and a playbook. Poor bloody Smith is having zero mistakes coached into him which then takes away a chunk of his USP

Eddie does like to think he knows better than club managers who players spend 90%+ of their time playing with individuals, and working with them to exploit their strengths and minimise their weaknesses.

All this goes out the window, because EJ watches premiership games, watches players being successful and thinks "Nah - we'll play him differently, that will work".

The Smith who plays for Quins is nothing like the very restricted version under Jones. I just hope he survives to a post EJ era.

The post EJ era is starting a couple of years too late

I'd argue the post EJ era should have started after RWC2019 - since then we have seen no innovation, no inspiration and very little to stir the heart.
That final sums up everything we have seen since.

well, let's see how this lot fare at the weekend...

same 10/12 axis but 'big Joe' and Marchant both dropped. Care on the bench with Underhill replacing Curry.
