Not recorded it for a bit but mid-high 50's is normal resting, I think asleep I've dropped to mid 40's when I bothered to keep my HRM on and set the recording period long enough.

Absolute max was 7 years ago at a parkrun: 206bpm.
Currently typically peaks at around 191-195 as I simply don't enjoy hooning myself anymore when a PB is way off, though I can push it to 200+ when I race when ill (not fun at all).

Absolute lowest resting was 38bpm some 2 years ago.
Current resting sits at around 42-44bpm.

Back with a wheeze and some phlegm. Dursley Dozen done in a pedestrian 2.27. Legs were seriously tired at 7 miles, just leaden. Ran on for another couple and then the last of the energy was burnt and it was a struggle to run anything, even the downs.

Silver linings are, not dead, given I had flu last week and was bedridden, plus the shin seems ok, though I'll be stretching and icing just in case.

Highlights were the boggiest downhill ever, like running down a sand dune, but squelchy, and climbing The Precipice, which really did require the rope supplied. Never had sore arms on a run before...

Nike's online returns policy is very, very good. They insist that you try the shoes out and will take them back if they're not to your liking. I've returned a couple of pairs in the past 2 years that weren't as expected (too soft, half size too small, half size too big etc).

You shouldn't have any problem returning them. Warranty issues are also very good, where they've sent me a fresh pair of racing flats after the upper prematurely ripped.
And so it came to be. Sent them back. Had to call them today as had no confirmation of receipt. 5 mins on call to an Irish girl who refunded the order instantly.

Can't say fairer than that. People do kick Nike as some kind of Evil Empire. But this sort of service means I will happily buy their products again.

Nike have their issues, but their support of Colin Kaepernick means that they're ok by me.

Edited to avoid back to back posting:

14-Feb - Finally a decent run. Shin felt good, legs felt ok, lungs left a lot to be desired, but certainly I'm on the upward swing again. I can start to think about the races upcoming instead of worrying about rehabbing all the time.

Has anyone done Tour de Helvellyn and if so do you know if they vet entries and what they are hoping to see?

They says it's hard and winter and need to navigate and not for novices etc.

I'm confident I can do it (with proper training of course), I can navigate and handle the cold.

No, but does this help? https://www.nav4.co.uk/tour-de-helvellyn/

https://www.sientries.co.uk/event.php?elid=Y&e... you can do through the entry there to see what it asks.

Are you:

"It is a condition of entry that you are suitably experienced and have the skills necessary to look after yourself in very challenging terrain and conditions. This is no ordinary trail run, but needs winter hill running experience"? Looks tough, I wouldn't trust me own navigation!

Cool thanks. The link on their website to register is for last year. When I looked then other day I couldn't see the entry.

I'll just enter and see what they say.

Yup - the entry is here: https://www.sientries.co.uk/index.php?page=L&a...
I don't really like the tone in which they write their instructions, it is somewhat condescending but they are obviously fed up with people who try and break the rules.

Yeah I know what you mean. "Must be proper winter weight clothing, not compression crap". Guess they don't want to be responsible for some noob getting lost on the fells in winter in shorts and t shirt.

Joe Faulkner (Nav4) is an extremely accomplished mountain runner himself and has been for many years; he's very savvy and has seen enough to have chosen his words carefully...

So as the weather is clearly turning good (well sortof biggrin ) I actually wore shorts today!

However, I could do with some new ones, but it seems from my initial searches that virtually no run specific shorts have pockets with a zip confused I'm obviously going to need at least 1, preferably 2 pockets. (For a key and a small MP3 player). So the pockets don't need to be huge. Mid/ 3qtr thigh is probably about right length. I tend to favour shorts that you wear something underneath, but will consider other solutions if better

Any suggestions from the major brands?

I run exclusively in Decathlon shorts, I forget the model of them but they have a good zip pocket to the rear and a key pocket to the front.
They have revised the design a couple of times over the years but even my earliest ones are still going strong. Ample room for house and car key and the phone and some cash or cards in the back for longer runs.

Here's another idea that I use:

https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B01CD8GHS0/ref...

The advantage of this is that it doesn't jump up and down constantly, like anything of weight in shorts would.

In warm weather on long runs where I need to take a drink with me I use this:

A couple of gear related questions:

Decathlon road shoes. Anyone got any experience of their durability? I recently shelled out an eye watering amount on a pair of shoes from one of the big brands (buying purely on fit, not features for the record.) I realised I'm already putting a lot of miles into them so I'm looking to pick up something cheap for midweek 'filler,' type runs. I'm going to try some out in store to see how they feel, but I wondered if anyone has put 500-ish miles into a pair and how they held up?

Secondly I'm on the hunt for a treadmill for times when I'm stuck in the house. I'm hoping that NY resolutions are failing and that cake storage is taking priority over an unused treadmill so I'm looking second hand. I know not the first thing about them. I know that I want a minimum of 15% incline and ideally 20kph max speed so I've got the option to do workouts on them. Hoping to come away with change from £200-250.
Any recommendations on brands to look out for or avoid?

Thanks. I'll have a look in my local one a some point over the next week or so.

Thanks for the suggestions.

Though I cant wear a HR strap since I feel restricted in them. So not sure any SPI type belt is going to work for me.
Regarding the camelbak, I'm only training for Marathon, so probably don't need the extra fluid. (though to be honest I could have done with something like a bottle of lucozade sport on this mornings 16miler! Massive bonk coupled with dehydration! eeklaugh

It’s these ones that have been good to me

https://www.decathlon.co.uk/run-dry-night-shorts-g...

Regards Decathlon shoes, I have one 5 mins from me so tend to use them a lot but the shoes are OK. I’ve broken through the toe box on mine in about 400k but not worsened since the first small hole. Tread and support going ok. (Kliprun Fast)

I wore my camelpak to do 14 miles yesterday, as its February I did ponder if it was necessary but I'm very glad I did. In anything other than the very cold I'll always wear it off in going to be running more than an hour.

I use the Salomon Twin Skin/Exo shorts....has a zip pocket and very handy like elastic belt built in that you can put things in and they don't fall out..! Very worth while and light weight too! A touch expensive but depends what your looking for (i'm lucky i don't need to buy them)!!
