Last xc league race of the season on Sunday. Let me start by saying a) the flu, b) heavy squats on Friday c) a long run on Saturday. A good range of excuses then...

I tore round the course (9.6km) in 44.45, good enough for 147th from 193. I even snuck up on and out-sprinted an MV50 runner in the last 50m. If I was 60+, I'd still have been 6th in category. These retirees have too much time to train, clearly.

As ever, the speedsters had a ball on a nice flat fast course. The first 81 runners all went sub 40. The winner was round in 31.34. Total fail for him - he didn't even lap me this time. Good job it wasn't windy though, or he'd have been blown away.

But seriously, four league races and a county champs, all on interesting, challenging courses and a total cost of less than £30 for all five races. You don't need to be a club member to race, though I did join my local club and the team atmosphere was great. Loads of banter, no one taking things too seriously and plenty of comedy chatter among the back of packers. I seriously encourage anyone to give it a go.

After my Friday/Saturday/Sunday triumvirate of training, today is a proper rest day. Eat well, and no exercise save walking to the water cooler and coffee machine. I feel like I'm, if not back on track for an April marathon, at least in with a fighting chance of turning in a not-terrible time and the main thing, I'm having fun.

Edited for speeling.

You speedy guys - my lungs get ejected on anything like <10k...!

Shorts - each to their own but I've stuck with Speedo swimming shorts for over a decade - 2 mega front pockets, one Velcro pocket - maps, hats, gloves fit in comfortably if they are on and off all day.

Tempo for me now is ramping up - 50-60 mile weeks at the moment and about 3.75k vertical; ran through a hamstring problem but PF is dogging me again.

I've got a pair of Salomon 'twin-skin' shorts. Lycra with a looser second panel. They have a single zip pocket on the back and a couple of stretchy, open pockets that would take a gel (or an inhaler in my case).

The exact model I have isn't available any more but having a quick look, they have a few options now and one has zipped side pockets too

I'm quite a fan of Asics shorts. I would avoid Dare2Be shorts though - three runs and the pocket went through.

Shorts - MoreMile, Alpkit and Ronhill. They're all pretty good.

Half Marathon on Saturday around Chasewater Country Park. I was aiming for a PB, but top of my foot has been sore for the past week, starting to ease now, but not sure how it will feel racing for a PB! We'll see...

Shinsplints are back. Booo. Obviously the intensity of racing was too much too soon. Shame. Icepack in residence on the leg again...

Big fan of Nike's "Race Day" and "Aeroswift" shorts. The latter are 2 inch, so perfect for hot summers but they do leave you feeling quite exposed and vulnerable!

Also a fan of Brook's "Sherpa" shorts for general training use.

Brooks are also one of my favourites. Decent quality. I’ve had a pair for three years and still going strong

2"! Don't run past a Primary School eh? That is a bold short length.

Hi Chaps,

Recent convert to running here, current max distance 10k in just over an hour. Been doing mostly road stuff apart from when the weather was dry doing some bits of trails in my road shoes, but I want to start doing a bit more trail running. I thought probably the best bet would be to start with shoes with some road bias as on the whole I would need to do part of the run on the road (although I may graduate to driving to an offroad run if that makes sense). Anyway, I have shortlisted a few "light" trail shoes, wondering what people thought.

Inov8 Parkclaw
Saucony Peregrine
Brooks Cascadia
Hoka Challenger

I've tried on the first 3 and they all felt much of a muchness to be honest (in a good way) - Saucony/Brooks I ran on a treadmill and they felt fine although the guy reckoned I could go a half size smaller in the Brooks, I wasn't convinced TBH. Inov8s seemed to fit well and apparently fit my relatively wide feet well. There was a bit of squish in my quick road run (I guess "they all do that") but hard to compare with the other 2 due to the difference between treadmill & road.

Hoka Challenger a bit of a wildcard thrown at me, not tried them. Leaning towards the Inov8 or Saucony at the moment, but any thoughts from you guys? Going to buy online, all around £60 from sportsshoes.com - guess they're last years models or something at those prices...

I've got some Salomon Sense Ride's which I bought for similar reasons to you. The soles aren't too aggressive so they run okay on the road and they coped well with several muddy 10k trail events that I did over the winter, only had issue with their grip in one or two muddy descents but stayed upright.

I run in Hokas on the road (just ordered a new pair on Bondis), love them for road running as they're so soft which suits my iffy back and pub runner physic biggrin

Fantastic day out among the Crainlarich hills, only 15 miles but 2.4k lift, tops clear and great viz plus a slight positional embarrassment to add a bit of climb...what more could you ask?!

I use the Salomon Twin Skin/Exo shorts....has a zip pocket and very handy like elastic belt built in that you can put things in and they don't fall out..! Very worth while and light weight too! A touch expensive but depends what your looking for (i'm lucky i don't need to buy them)!!
thanks but at £72 I think I'll pass laugh

Thanks to others for the Asics and Brooks suggestions.

Something to consider. Saw this video long time ago

https://www.runandbecome.com/running-injury-advice...

Jump to 3:45 The feet rotating, up and down thing.

I did this when I first experienced shin splints. I do it habitually after every run. I don't know WHY it works, but it seems to work for me, so maybe give it a bash.

I don't know what that means. confused

Most shorts I could probably live with are shown as 5" or 7" Which also doesn't make any sense to me, since my current Adidas shorts (just above knee length) are 19" from waistband to end (and 9 3/4" from the crotch to the end of the leg)

I always buy decathlon shorts & socks. The shorts are about £5 and better than the £20+ Nike’s I used to buy...

A 34 second PB. Was about 50% off road too (trails) so all things considered, not too bad.

Balloch to Clydebank half in a few weeks, so aiming for another PB.

So as the weather is clearly turning good (well sortof biggrin ) I actually wore shorts today!

However, I could do with some new ones, but it seems from my initial searches that virtually no run specific shorts have pockets with a zip confused I'm obviously going to need at least 1, preferably 2 pockets. (For a key and a small MP3 player). So the pockets don't need to be huge. Mid/ 3qtr thigh is probably about right length. I tend to favour shorts that you wear something underneath, but will consider other solutions if better

Any suggestions from the major brands?
Alternative suggestion, a bloke out on a run yesterday had a key pouch laced in to his trainer which seemed like a good idea (in dry weather).

My tried & tested short combo is a compression inner from Skins, 2XU or whoever. For an outer short I venture into the shopping hell that is Sports Direct, find something in black with pockets (some have zips) for about £5 a pair, grab several and exit as quickly as possible.
