Doesn't make sense, does it?
You'd think he'd be ok to continue playing if he was cleared of the charges, not added to the squad moments after the charges are announced after previously being excluded from the tour.
The only explanation I can imagine, and please don't criticise me for this thought process, is that he could have been charged with a much more serious offence, but when the affray charge was declared, they thought, oh that's a relief it's only affray. Only affray? Not minor is it? Unless perhaps they are going to try and negotiate down to a much lesser charge to avoid complicated and expensive hearings.

But in essence agree, it doesn't make sense.

Update, just heard he was threatening to sue for restraint of trade.

The two quick wickets have put us right back in this.

Another routine win against a disappointing Aussie outfit. Why is Australian cricket in such bad shape ?

Ali however is having a shocker, even Roooooot got a wicket today, as did Rashid. 1 run, no wickets .. well I guess it will work at some point

Used to be the beard to be feared six months ago. Now its the beard of weird.

For NZ tests I'd really shake it up and combine test and one day team

Hales
Roy
Stoneman
Root
Bairstow (wicketthingy)
Stokes
Malan
Woakes
Broad
Crane
Anderson

Dropping Cook, Vince and Moeen Ali.

I think that medium pace bowling attack will do well in NZ, give Crane more experience on the slower side of things.

That batting line up is more firm at the very top than it has been up to now.

Was that ever verified?

Restraint of trade my arse. The ECB lawyers should have more balls.

Suspending him from the England side until he is charged/tried is fair enough if that's their rules. They're quite evidently not restraining his trade as he's playing in NZ. Rather than threatening to sue he'd be better off getting anger mgmt courses - take on the blame for his stupid actions.

If the ECB decision was "if he gets charged he could be dragged back at short notice and we don't want the aggro/disruption" then fair enough. But that also makes the current situation nonsensical.

What it really highlights is where the biggest problem with English cricket is. Weak and clueless senior management.

Stokes is in court in Bristol on 13th feb now

he has a central contract of £900k so he should be getting paid but losing his match fee

Depending on how that court case goes, and tbh even without it, he should be considering himself lucky to still have that 900k contract.

I've heard (no idea if true) he may have been defending someone. Regardless, he was an idiot.

On the footage I've seen he looked very much the aggressor. There may well have been events leading up to that unseen, but following through at that point and in that way did not seem necessary at all. Especially with someone known to have a temper and in the public eye on the eve of a massive series.

I would be surprised if he didn't get a sentence of some description.

You won't see a much better last 12 overs or so of ODI than this.

Absolutely brilliant from Woakes & Buttler

Yeah great comeback by England.

Hopefully an entertaining chase (leading to a loss) for Australia.

Looking good.

It's very easy to see why non-cricket fans switch on to the short game.
