There are actually a set of the Kirkland wedges on ebay at the moment for £80 for all 3. Worth it? 52, 56, 60. (I realise that this is not what was suggested but I just remembered them and did a quick search)
I would avoid them. Not because they arent good clubs, its that the gap between your PW and the 52 is too big. You really need a gap wedge maybe look for 48/49 degree one, and then look for a 52 + 56.

As a beginner you dont need a 60 degree wedge. Im a 25 handicap, and only use my 56 when im in the bunker. Most of my short game is played with a chipper biggrin

Keep an eye out for any secondhand / ex demo clubs which would work out good value. Quite a few manufacturers make wedges with additional help which would be worth a shot. https://www.independentgolfreviews.com/best-wedges... these are for 2023 but should be able to pick up wedges a few years old which would work perfectly well.

As per the above posts - how tall are you? 1 inch longer irons are really, really long and would normally be for players around 6'5.
I'm 6'3" - they were custom fitted at AG so I was trusting their judgement - also got stiff shaft and the thicker Lamkin grips

Honestly don't get it - unless I've subconsciously changed my swing and am shortening my arms. Ball position seems ok, heads staying fairly steady over the ball (apart from the odd lift too early which I appreciate will cause a top)

Frustrating that I bought new irons to move that side of my game on (as that was ok) but never used to use woods, as I was wild with them. Felt like yesterday my driver (Taylormade Burner) and my 3 wood (G15) were the best clubs in my bag.

Best thing I ever did was buying the mallet putter instead of the old Odyssey XG #1 though
I think you defiantly need to see a pro and they will be able to see why you are struggling to strike the ball. One inch long irons might be ideal for you, but because of you grip / set-up / swing path your then not hitting the ball as expected.

Is there a driving range / course you play regularly? I know your looking for recommendations for a coach, but its all subjective and we all learn differently. Perhaps just book one lesson and see what they recommend in terms of how your swinging the club and are the clubs the issue?

Nice 76 today in lovely conditions, started off a little grey and breezy but that changed to sunny and no wind by the 10th.
First time with the G430 Hybrids and hit them 8 times and 5 of them were peaches, the 4 especially was great - lovely high apex and carry around 195.

Nice man, score like that justifies the recent outlay for new clubs smile

The irons are incredible, such a step on from the previous set of Muzuno. In 2 round with the Pings I've hit some really memorable shots, the image above was a 7 iron into a 15mph wind from about 140, straight over the flag.

As a treat to myself for breaking 100, I'm thinking of treating myself to some new (to me) wedges. I'm playing Stealth irons up to PW (1 degree weak meaning 44 degrees) and then a sand wedge from my old set, no idea what the loft is.

What sort of lofts would be a good starting point? 50, 54, 58? Also looking for any recommendations of brand
Your old sand wedge is likely to be 56 degrees. How do you get on with it?

If you are happy with it, I would keep it. Way too many courses have stones in bunkers and I would not be happy putting stone chips into a £100+ new wedge.

That leaves a nice gap for a 50 degree wedge.

The above keeps it nice a simple in wedge selection and provides a good gap between the 3 clubs. And if you really get on with the 50, it should be easy to pick up a 56 degree version of the wedge as a future purchase.

Nice birdie on #3, it's a nice hole if you manage to avoid going left! 4th is also nice with the elevation..

So, umm... I actually saw your message AFTER I'd just bid on the wedges and I ended up winning them... lol

For under 100 quid for 3 wedges, I'm not too fussed. Perhaps I'll start off without using the 60, or add a cheap 48 etc

Decent wedges for the price. It would be fairly easy for a pro to bend them a couple of degrees to make the gaps closer if you really need to. But as a relative beginner, I wouldn’t worry about it too much if I were you. Just play with them and enjoy.

Congrats biggrin

I’m trying to get my retired father into golf, he’s only 57 but sold his business and doesn’t really have any hobbies as such. Silkstone would be the closest course, how are the practice facilities? I did notice on their website they have an academy membership, is there a short par 3 course? Do you have any kind of range?

Just really think it would be good for him to pick up in retirement instead of sitting around the house annoying my mother.

I'm not a member of Silkstone (even though it's close for me) however, it's a lovely club

It's a nice layout and always in decent condition, has a nice friendly bunch of members who you can always jump into the games or fiddles with.

It has a nice open range/practice area and also a chipping green with bunker etc.

The others to consider in that sort of area would be Woolley and Tankersley.

Ebay can be fun, bought some Wilson Staff Pi5 irons for 50+8 packaging, they arrived, and they look like someone has played maybe 10 games max with them!

They're for my lad who's getting into golf. I also managed to get a W/S bag for 10+5 packaging, it arrived and is immaculate! smile

2nd hand can really work, I'd recommend cast over forged as they wear so much better, anyone not knowing what W/S Pi5s are, Harrington won 2 Opens with them, good clubs for the money.

Cast Vs forged is one of those old debates, like blade Vs cavity, graphite Vs steel etc etc. In performance terms there's no real difference, it's more a case of what you're looking for. Cast are harder wearing but also harder to adjust in terms of loft/lie, whereas forged irons feel much softer (due to the different steel they have to use for the forging process) but can go out of alignment if you use driving ranges a lot.

I'm a forged man personally as I am more of a feel player, but I also know the amount I play I'll have to get the lofts and lies checked every 18 months or so.

Plus, shiny.

hehe

I have forged blades, nothing comes close to how good they feel, love them.

My point was more to do with 2nd bargains, cast wear better, and are typically cheaper. The Pi5s in particular, because W/S aren't as sought after as the more popular brands smile

Had a fantastic week in Portugal just gone

Great weather and golf - Although I was terrible lol

The first hole at the Old Course - Was my best day despite finding my driver and hybrids shafts both got damaged and cracked either from the day before back to the hotel or from the hotel the course.. Shot 8 over - The day before we played Millennium and made the most impressive 16 points ever seen..

Looks amazing. I’m off in 2 weeks to play Old Course, Pinhal, Millennium and Quinta N&S. can’t wait. What was your favourite course?

We pleased Pinhal, Millennium, Old and Vale do Lobo Ocean.

For me the Old was my favourite but only by a smidge to play. Ocean was just amazing to be by the sea playing and it not feeling like a links course - Some breath taking views

Ocean is great - really playable for any standard of golfer as well as being stunning.

Never played Old - really looking forward to it. Played Pinhal and thought that was great.
