I want to see him play oversees first before I will comment. Opening in England against fast late movement is not easy. I 'd like to see Jennings open for us over the winter. He has made a century, and sometimes coming through a tricky start can be the makings of a player. Too soon to give up in my opinion
I agree.

It was a soft shot. And he knew it - furious with himself. I can handle that as long as they learn.

Am in the Peter May stand today. Great day for watching cricket.

It's a tricky situation for the selectors now with Cookie retiring. We struggle to find one good opener, let alone two. They've got less than a month to decide before they get on the boat to Sri Lanka, and no more matches before then to trial any new batters.
Put Ali in as an opener, he’s been saying he wants more time as a batsman. If he can learn how to take the shine off the new ball, I reckon he’ll nail it. But seriously, they tried putting him in ahead of Root at the Ageas Bowl last weekend, it didn’t quite work, but it would be worth keeping him at at least mid order, to give him a chance to develop as an all rounder

Ali bats 3 for his County

its much easier for 3/4 to come in if the openers have batted for at least an hour and taken the sting out of the new ball

I was reading about Rory Burns the other day. meant to be very good so hopefully will go to SL

hehe He nicked one and got dropped.

Bowling is tighter after lunch. Indians must have been starving in the morning.

He's looking good though. Come on Cooky give us another chance. biggrin

Pah, at 2.21 runs per over - I want your mob to get him out too.

Why aren't we going at 4 and over ?

Useless wink

I'd love it if he could stay in and slowly grind out a massive score over a couple of days. Last chance to show the youngsters how to open in a Test match.

Cook out. 29 short of a century frown

And then Root, who is almost a walking wicket these days.

Ali isn't setting the world on fire, but he is at least still in!

You wait a long time for one and three come along at once. Thanks Cooky! You get one more chance.

This Ali bloke has played and missed about 30 balls. He's clearly no #3. A proper #3 would have nicked one of those!

Something is wrong with Bairstows head at the moment.

Shocking.

Agreed. He's definitely a lower order batsman. As a one day batsman middle order is fine for me as he can be very destructive.

I agree, I think he's caught something from the selectors, who also have something wrong with their heads.

Might be something wrong with Peaceful Ginger's head, but nothing wrong with Aggers' Manuka Honey cake.

Mmm cake.

He needs a few overs to get his eye in, he’s invariably first man up after lunch, so he’s getting skittled easily. He can’t half crack a ‘car park six’ given half a chance though.

I've been out all morning, just checked the score.

It couldn't have been any better for us.
