Hope the fell race went well.

UTMB week has been rolling on. The big race starts in a few mins... Exciting times.
Friend of mine is on the UTMB. Been dipping in and out of the live tracking to see how he's doing. Madness biggrin (although I do have an odd desire to do something like that myself)

Been loving the live coverage on YouTube and iRunFar's excellent Twitter feed. Madness indeed, but in such scenery.

Loads of the Scottish runners are there at the moment, my wife thinks it’s her only chance at a podium! Great performance by Mann, Konrad & Paris on the PTL (bucket list race for me) & a few mates yet to drag themselves over the line.

Is anyone here running the Great South Run 10 miles in Portsmouth mid-October? Looks like a flat course but keen to hear from anyone who’s done it before.

It’ll be a step up in distance for me as 10k is my upper level at present, with my best time in training of 51 mins. Will aim to finish the race in around 1h20-1h25.

Any argument for specifically preparing for this distance or just a case of completing a few training runs of this length prior to the big day? I can’t imagine the extra 6k will be too difficult.

  • Update - decided to give it a go today, as the weather was pretty perfect. Slowed down my overall pace to get a feel for the additional distance and did 10 miles in 1:25:52. Furthest I’ve run in many years and felt good, tired legs/knees now. 46 years old and not getting any younger...

Cheshire half marathon for me last weekend and just went over the 1hr 35min mark. I wanted to get near 1:30 before the race but at mile 11 I got a huge stitch under my right ribs at the bottom so the last two miles were spent grinding it out and my pace slowed a fair bit. Would have been nice to go sub 1:35 but I can't complain smile

Yep, both me and the Wife are booked in for the Great South on 20th Oct. Also booked my first Marathon (Bournemouth on the 6th Oct)

I'm 50 next month and definitely not getting any younger. As it's my first Marathon, just getting round would be great My best 1/2 Marathon time is 1:47:12

Good stuff, I’m really looking forward to it, sounds like a very well organised and big event.

Best of luck with the first marathon!

Me too, but in training for Bournemouth marathon and GSR - had a bit of an accident so, knees are a bit bruised etc

Note to self, don't think training on a treadmill will alleviate injury :-)

Ha - no. Long story and due in part to some faulty gym equipment. Bloody hurt though

That's happened to loads of people at my club (including me), just getting out and running seems too much effort!

Go somewhere completely different, no watch, no strava etc and just go for a run. Hopefully kick start you again.

What is the Marathon Training book often referred to in here. I think it is by Steve Jones, but can’t remember, does anyone have a link ?

Thanks

To quote Noakes on his own book: "If you've got Lore of Running, tear out the section on nutrition"

I did exactly the opposite, but it worked! Went to my local park and did the club race I'd entered. Crap night's sleep, crap food all week, but then my old neighbour turned up. Well, no sense in giving him a freebie in the running rivalry stakes, so I went off with ambition and managed to come in well under my predicted time. I also had the pleasure of chatting with Angie Sadler on the way round, who is a twice to 20 Comrades finisher, amongst (many, many) other things.

Feeling better about running, so maybe the contrary approach has worked!

Hi, can anyone recommend a good running buggy? This one seems to have reasonable reviews. Not sure whether to go for an off road buggy which I assume would be OK for road use (but not the other way round)?
