So…… 15 weeks into the new year.

So far I’ve either played golf or practiced 28 times (played 14 times, range or practice 14 times).

Handicap is down 1.1 since start of the year.

Out of 71 players I’ve been unluckily enough to be a part of the only preliminary draw in our main knock out comp!

Playing the guy tomorrow late afternoon and have to give him 19 shots!

First medal of the year on Sunday.

Hopefully with better weather comes better shooting.

My 8 best scores have come from my last 13 cards.

Target of 7 for the year off to a good start.

Cheers! So far my practice/play twice a week is certainly helping.

Yes, I’m very lucky. No winter rules, winter tees or winter greens for us so proper playable golf all year round.

Feel for you guys having to put up with the muddy courses yuck

Shot 80 last night and lost 5&4 laugh

Had to give 19 shots and the guy couldn’t miss with his putter - absolutely unplayable! Good fun though.

That's silly - it's only a game!

Plus the guy I played really is a lovely guy, happy for him. He shot 110 in the comp at the weekend, shot 93 last night! Certainly his day.

That's how I would feel too - I bet he's chuffed. He probably felt like he had to play at his absolute best and he did.

There are plenty of higher handicappers out there that can shoot those numbers on successive days without being a sandbagger. I mean even the pros can shoot 65 one day, and 76 the next!.
Exactly smile

Decent start to the season for me, helps spot being able to practice through the winter easily, so feel like I've hit the ground running rather than having to get really up to speed.

The new Scotty is working really well, I was very worried adding it to the bag and kept gold of the evnroll expecting to put it back in but that's not the case.

The G430 max, feels like a bit of a cheat stick, really can hit it all over the face and hardly get punished for it. I didn't really want to give up 10-20 yards over the LST but the amount it keeps me in play is worth it.

Good work! Are they fairly short courses? A 76 at mine would give me a score differential of a round 4. What are the course ratings?

OK, yeah they all have course ratings under their par, especially Lees Hall.

Played with a friend yesterday and were both doing general play cards....

Was +6 (play off 7) though 9 and feeling quite happy to go up half a shot ahead of this weekend (2 day medal) only to shoot a +2 back 9 and take 0.2 off the index....no change to playing handicap thankfully!

Nice one!

I find the slope rating a bit of a red herring to be honest, the course rating is more of a give away as to how hard the course plays.

For example our course only has a slope rating of 121 off the tips! But it’s a par 68 and plays 6500 yards. It’s brutal.
The course rating however is almost 4 shots harder than par at 71.8. There’s only 1 par 5 (the 1st), and only 2 par 4’s shorter than 435 yards.

The way slope is based doesn’t always work very well with links courses - for example very few hazards directly in front of the greens as they’re designed to take bump and run shots and have the ball played along the ground.

Still, works OK for me as my handicap normally travels very well!

Finally achieved a long term ambition of shooting under par (-2 gross).

4 birdies in a 32 gross front 9 (including 3 on the trot). 7 pars and 2 bogies on the back 9.
Ridiculous really, no warm up and 10c with a fairly strong breeze.
Nice one Ray, that's awesome! Don't think I'll ever get there myself!

Shot a very average 82 on Sunday, started off well with an eagle putt on the first (missed it but tap in birdie), and then seemed to be fighting hooks for the rest of the front 9. Pulled it together a bit on the back nine and finished the last 7 holes 3 over the card. Putted and chipped well.

Nice little 9 holes last night, lovely evening. Shot 38 with a silly double on the par 3 7th. Birdied 8 and 9.

Felt like I found something in the last 3 or 4 holes so something to work on at the weekend.

Playing at Royal Blackheath on Sunday before the long drive up to Leeds on Tuesday for rounds at Alwoodley and Moortown.

Excellent work theguvernor, sounds some impressive golf being played by our regulars as the moment!

Had my latest lesson this morning and didn't have high expectations - my form since the last one has been pretty poor (83, 85 and an NR) and my golf hasn't really been there - it's working at the range but the transfer to the course has been more challenging.

He looked at my swing and was pleased with progress, and said he expected some dodgy form due to the size of change were making to my backswing to get it more on plane and the required re-routing on the way down.

He said I was bang on where he wanted me in P1 to P3 (new terms for Grip and Rip It disciple like me) with excellent shoulder turn on the way back, but then I turn a bit more, go past horizontal and go back inside the line very briefly. Not a major problem in its own, but set the club off on the wrong path meaning I have to save it on the way through still.

So he has me working on a new drill - turn fully on the way back but feel like I'm only taking a 3 Quarter swing, hold the position to check where I am then swing through - then do full swings with the same feeling.

So aiming for more John Rahm than John Daly hehe

Don't think I've ever hit the ball as well as I did post lesson - nice penetrating flight much lower than usual, with a nice little draw and plenty of spin.

Going to pop to the range tomorrow for more drills, then take it out to the course, which I'm looking forward to.
Great work. Like you I struggle to take range form to the course. I seem to be much better at getting around the course than I do replicating the solid striking at the range.

Alright golfers Been a busy week or so for me.

Moortown and Alwoodley on Wed/Thurs last week, and then 36 holes at Little Aston on Wednesday this week.

All 3 courses were fantastic - especially Alwoodley. And Little Aston was in phenomenal condition - greens were the best I've played in a long time.

Played some OK golf, driving it well but irons were a bit hot and cold. Plenty of 3 putts at Little Aston - scary quick greens!

I do love a traditional locker room - and the snooker room at Moortown is fantastic!

Nice pics, my mates are playing the Senior England Golf Championship at Alwoody so is probably why its in good nick.
Alwoodley was in pretty good condition, but a couple of their greens (17 and 18 and a few others) have had some disease and weren't great.

Little Aston however was faultless..... very impressive especially after such a wet April.

Have a friend who is a member of Moortown and Alwoodley, and in relation to Moortown I simply do not get why it is ranked so highly in the great courses. If it didn't have the history it does it wouldn't rank anywhere near where it does as is IMO simply average at best. Its scruffy, pretty average layout, decent greens, but the facilities are so out of date is ludicrous.

Not played Alwoodley so can't comment, but would pick its neighbour Headingley over Moortown any day of the week (and did do) if you want that type of course, or if you wanted something more picturesque (and shorter) go with Ilkley, although you'd have to get used to the clubhouse being a ghost town.
Well in my experience last week - it certainly wasn't scruffy and the greens were better than Alwoodley. Agreed that some of the holes were a little dull, but I certainly wouldn't call it average. I've played plenty of average golf courses and this wasn't one of them IMO!

The Clubhouse was fantastic - so much history. The locker rooms and snooker room were fabulous. The bar/dining room areas also very nice.
Compared to Alwoodley (which was obviously rebuilt in the 90's), it oozes nostalgia. I prefered the Moortown clubhouse to Alwoodley.
Not sure what facilities are out of date? The range and putting green were fine and nicely positioned near the first tee.

Overall, I enjoyed it!

I currently use the Z-Star Diamond, I think they're a great ball.

Available at loads of places on a 4 for 3 at the moment, so £30 a dozen. Excellent value. For example:

I play a lot of wind at my home course and I'd say they're very good.
