A few piccies from yesterdays Laugavegur Ultra Trail race in Iceland. The scenery here is next level, and the race felt like a live action Lord of the Rings.

Wow - stunning scenery and looks like a beautiful race.

Very well done - I’d be very happy just finishing that, but I think that’s a great time for a hilly 54km trail run clap

I don’t really think they’re going to be comparable to the ZF3 to be honest. The Tempo sounds like a softer training shoe which I think will be dominated more by the fall off provided by the Zoom X foam ahead of the Zoom unit, than the plate. I think it will roll instead of pop.

Decent 18 miles in the Saucony Endorphin Shifts this morning. Would definitely recommend them to anyone looking for a long run shoe.

Interesting to see they’re racing over in Iceland. What pandemic measures were in place?

Thanks! I could of dipped below 6 hrs, but my legs would have suffered for few days afterwards and I had an MTB trail tour booked today.

Really slick operation in Iceland, seems to be a combination of safety and pragmatism for the tourist economy. They have a list of safe countries currently UK is included, which means you do not need to apply to visit in advance, almost like a health visa. Then 72 hrs from arrival you register online for an airport Covid-19 test, on arrival the review your documentation and you get tested. I then received my results via SMS in 4 hours.

For the race you need to fill in documentation and show your Covid-19 test results. The foreigners are then transported separately to the start (4 hours in a 4x4 bus, which included some river crossings with water almost reaching the windows). We ate separately to the locals before and after the race. During the race no social distancing to speak of.

Interesting.

My Pegasus 37's got the first longer distance outing this morning. Very impressed. Great shoe for easy days and middle distance running where pace isn't the primary concern. Good shoe, fit's nice and the cushioning is good.

- go for more distance? Noticed a half marathon nearby in October, which might be a suitable thing to aim at?

- go for better technique? Though this would need help from others, and i'm really not after chasing numbers.

Whatever happens I will definitely keep it up, at whatever speed or distance I can manage.

Top stuff.

I would recommend a club if you can. The vast majority of clubs are predominantly "recreational" runners. This is a very wide definition, but by that, I mean people who like to run, but it doesn't dominate their lives. There are some clubs which are very performance focused, but in either case, they're likely to be friendly. There are willy-wavers in all walks of life and running clubs are no different, but it feels like a big extended family to me, in general. I'm awful at cross country (I race it because it's brilliant fun), and because of that, I have a massive cheering squad when I run the finishing straight. All the other club members who've already finished, instead of going off to get dry, clean and warm, are standing there in a vest and shorts clapping others in.

If you've just started, the three absolutely key things to longevity and improvement are:

1) Warm up, cool down and do some mobility exercises, especially on any area that feels tight after a run.

2) Consistency. three 5ks a week beats one 15k run a week every time.

3) Steady improvement. There's a rule of no more than 10% per week increase. This will help keep you injury free. Taking this further, there are essentially three variables to running. You should only ever increase one at a time.

a) Volume (either by time, or distance)

b) Frequency (times per week)

c) Intensity (how hard you're trying)

Hi all,

Been reading this thread from afar for a few months now. Having tried to find a usable running forum for a while, it is surprising that this seems to be the only one I can get on with despite it being on a car forum.

Just want to say thanks for some of the tips I have picked up from here. For example, introducing intervals into my running once a week seems to have helped massively.

I've been an off on runner for a while, but never taken it seriously really. However in the past couple of months I've gone from 10k best of 49 mins down to 43:11, and my best 5k is 21:20. Both on a flat course.

I am also now running a 20-25k most weekends which I'm massively enjoying.

The only problem I have is the chat around new running shoes, which is probably going to cost me money in the coming weeks. Run in Hoka Rincons for everything currently, but starting to understand the likely benefits of having different shoes for different runs.

Finally starting to spend a bit more time in the office, so did my run commute home yesterday...I have got so unfit during lockdown! I started with good intentions thinking I could go out for a run at lunchtime several times a week but that soon fizzled out. I find run commuting is brilliant as by the time I've go to leave the office it's too late for "I can't be bothered" and the only option to be lazy is the short 3.5km run home rather than one of the longer options.

You just need to find the right club, there are lots out there at varying levels of competitiveness. It's a real shame parkrun isn't on at the moment as there'll be people there from loads of different clubs so you can get an idea of which ones suit you. I joined one I met through parkrun that's pretty informal and evening club runs cover a wide variety of pace and distance. Clubs are also a great way of getting in to other events too, I love our cross country league, and have entered quite a few local races I wouldn't have known about otherwise.

Could be worth doing a bit of stalking on Strava to see where people run locally and if they're members of clubs

Maybe training hard with the reward of faster times is your thing, but it's not for everyone. Personally I'm more a social runner, meeting up with a bunch of mates for a run and a natter over breakfast, or heading off in to some nice scenery with the Mrs (we ran to another country last week just for a laugh) , are what running is about for me...and burning off the calories so I feel I can justify the really big breakfast rather than the small one. And maybe a slice of cake...

This to me is why things like parkrun and running clubs are massively important, when I first started running I didn't know anyone else who ran other than my wife who'd done the C25K a few months before me, now I have loads of mates I met through running and it gives me motivation to keep running.

not a bad little plod this morning, bit hungover, 14.54miles, 3.10hrs 13.07min/mile 3189ft of climbing, and i actually ran most of it

Completely agree. Although my C25K journey continues, I'm fairly limited by where I can go which isn't brilliant. I love nothing more than just heading out and running my favourite trails. In fact, lets bung enjoyment in at #1.

How's the recovery going? Are you sticking strictly to using C25K to get back, or busking it a bit?

Good thanks. Sticking to C25K, though I had a two week hiatus due to getting the fear and laying off for a week, then falling and hurting my back, so giving it another week.

One thing I did notice is that, unsurprisingly, my pace is still there even though my endurance is shot to bits. So, I tended to run quite quickly in the run segments which is obviously not the point and way more stressful that I need. I've capped my pace for the run segments to 5m/km ~ 8m/mile, reasoning if I build back up to 5k at that pace, I should be in a good position to go. If I'd built back up at the pace I was doing, my first 5k was going to be a sub 21 minuter...

I have also broken out the skipping rope finally. I did 10x 30s on 30s off on grass yesterday with no ill effects on the shin, so I can add that in as a calf strength and high-end cardio exercise which should satisfy the endorphin need, allowing me a more causal run!

TLDR - well. I'd advocate C25K to anyone coming back from injury.

Nike Pegasus turbo 2 purchased this morning for £32.00

Not sure what to use them for, I do 2 interval sessions a week 2 easy runs and 1 long run.

Does anyone else here with kids ever have an unplanned break?/ Ive two small kids and so realistically the only time i have to run is first thing in the AM but the last few nights ive been up with a child with teething issues so haven dragged my carcass out of bed when the alram went off. I usually budget to do 35+km a week and to this end im at about 700km for the year. I'll struggle to get near this figure this week with the way things are going however. Im thinking of either going for broke and doing two super earlys and go try for a half marathon distance or writing the week off. Thing is im chomping at the bit to get out. Its not like im feeling tired at all.. what would the consensus here do??

I justify it by saying, rest is good for the body, at my and possibly your level it probably wont have any detrimental effects on your fitness.

Just run when you can as you say maybe this week just do 2 sessions you enjoy and forget about milage!? I would do a fartlek 10km and a quicker interval session (6x4min with 2 minutes rest)
