That’s sad to hear, albeit he’s had a long career and I’m sure he needs a break. The best imho.

Do you mean a ticket is £350 now or that £40 adjusted for inflation is £350?

BoE calculator shows £40.00 in 1992 is £84.34 in Sept 23
Thisismoney calculator reckons £40 in 1992 is £102 now.
That's weird - calculator I used gave me 350. It did seem rather high, will have to recheck
Whilst I used the BoE calculator which should be the definitive source, I did think £84 seemed a little bit light and £102 seems closer for an inflationary increase for discretionary purchases. Not £350 though smile
ok mystery resolved... the calculator defaulted to £100 when I followed the google link for this: £40 in 1982 biggrin

Yep, that's much better

Other than the fact it was 1992biglaugh

Apparently he had death threats after the final.

Some people really need to have a word with themselves.

New Zealanders. Some of the rubbish from that country on social media has been sickening.

It’s not helped by the st that coaches throw about either. Yes, Erasmus, we’re looking at you.

The team should be ashamed of some of their so called fans and publicly apologise for their actions.

Not helped by the media. Just read an article on it where it stated he was the first referee to produce a red card in a World Cup final - completely ignoring the fact that he didn't, and the bunker did it under review - the same as the yellow remaining so for Kolisi.

From a neutral, i thought he did a good job. As a ref myself (although Rugby League based) my mantra is that if both teams come off complaining that you're scensoredt then you've done a decent job biggrin

Evidence please. I've seen nothing of the sort.

You make it sound like we are all baying for blood when I suspect it was nothing more than a couple of 15yo 'hard men' on Facebook.

You must have missed it then. Because I clearly saw him show a yellow, cross his arms for the review, then a few minutes later raised a red card.

He's only 44-I would have placed him older.

Best ref in the world for me. Got to say I thought he had a good game for the final but with the TMO interventions he felt like a figure head rather than the one making the decisions. I've said before they need to sort the TMO and bunker out pronto. I reckon most fans would accept somethings being missed on the basis it speeds up the game and it will balance itself out. The current systems kind of needs to catch everything to make it fair, which when it isn't builds the animosity for the fans. But that will just slow the game down even more.

I supposed if you want to be pedantic he did produce the red, but he didn't make the decision did he? He relayed the decision made by the bunker in both cases.

To receive death threats for doing your job, in a game where you make split second decisions without multiple camera angles or replays, is quite frankly ridiculous. The noise on social media that I am seeing (presumably the algorythyms pick up on me talking about refereeing etc.) is shocking and a fine example of how polarized and confrontational they have made many aspects of life. And it's only getting worse as people retreat into their echo chambers

And yes, many of those pages stem from New Zealand, and the vast majority of comments in reply are from equally confrontational Boks.

As an example, in the England semi - my first impression was that the Bok prop was boring in, but that the decision went against England as they had lost the previous 3 scrums. With hindsight and a replay I saw Genge's knee go down first so the call was correct.

I didn't proceed to go onto Facebook to claim fixing and corruption within World Rugby though!

Note my use of the word 'some'. It was there for a reason. Facebook is full of it. It's really not hard to find.

Exhibit A.. it’s totally tedious.

Wayne Barnes has been the best ref we’ve had for many years, the finger pointing is just pathetic.. as is the attempt defensive of that behaviour.

That cesspit of screaming toddlers is not somewhere I would ever call credible as a representative example of truth.

My other frame of reference, of course, is my local Tier 6 club in South West London where the rugby might not quite reach the same standards, but we've still got a roof on the stand, there's no ticket charge at all, beer for members is under £4 a pint beer and we're doing pretty well without a sugar daddy, thanks! biggrin

On the contrary I think that the TMO and bunker system work really well. I'm all for improving things where possible and not standing still when you're in the lead but you only have to look at VAR in football to see how good the TMO system in rugby actually is.

That sounds fantastic value for entertainment - no ticket charge is impressive, many clubs I've been around over the years at that level/National 1/2 have been charging £5-8 to watch and still involves a 10 minute walk to the bog and the bar - meaning you've missed a quarter of the game just getting beer and a mid 2nd half slash!

Quite. The truth had very little to do with some of the rubbish being posted about Mr Barnes. Someone who claimed to be an alumnus of Otago university in NZ called me a 'doushe' when I made the point that some of his countrymen were overreacting. If he could have managed to spell the word correctly it would have been more impressive.

Otago University is a good university. I doubt that person could point to even the South island let alone Otago.

Every country has it's fools given their five minutes on Facebook. I wouldn't take their death threats against Mr Barnes any more seriously than a five year old truck or treating you with a witches hat on.
