The charity places want you to raise around £2k by the looks of it.
May be just me but I'm not keen on asking my friends and family for more money so that I can pursue my hobby - particularly as I did ask for donations to the air ambulance when I got a running club ballot place in 2018 and raised £2k for that anyway.
This is how I feel too as I raised money for doing my first marathon a few years ago. I also wouldn't be able to get close to the minimum requirement for a lot of the charities.May be just me but I'm not keen on asking my friends and family for more money so that I can pursue my hobby - particularly as I did ask for donations to the air ambulance when I got a running club ballot place in 2018 and raised £2k for that anyway.

It's easier to do one of the majors in another country than it is to do London TBH.
Agreed.London is all about raising money for charity now. Which is fair enough in my view.
Sure it’s a shame we can’t just turn up and push ourselves but that’s the way most marathons seem to be going.
The other option is to run faster and get a 'Good For Age' place.
Still not guaranteed, but a better chance than the general ballot.

That is my best chance. Just sub 3 to achieve! My current best is 4:15 although I was on for 3:45 before my knee imploded and I’ve got much faster/lighter since then. ![biggrin](/inc/images/biggrin.gif)

I don’t meant to be negative but that seems like a bit to go?
I haven’t run a marathon since 2016. My Best half time Then was 1:50, it’s now 1:35 and I’ve got faster since then even. I’m not saying I could do it today but with some focused training over a year or two I think I could crack it.I’ve done a fair few ultra since then but they are totally different to a race marathon

I got fed up applying for London, I got a place for Edinburgh instead. Made a weekend of it, saw the city and really enjoyed myself.
Much prefer doing that then try and get into London
Edinburgh is a great place! I went there March last year and did a lovely run! It was a stag and I'd had a skinfull the night before! Much prefer doing that then try and get into London

Well, my rib pain doesn't look like it's actually been a rib problem, per say. Yes, being a chiropractor it's taken me almost 2 weeks to figure it out (one can't exactly to a physical exam on oneself, mind....).....I am certain it's a quadratus lumborum strain. Before it started hurting I did feel like I had DOMS/tightness in that muscle, but thought nothing of it, but yes, it then got worse and caused significant rib pain. The rib pain has settled significantly but after a bike ride 4 days ago my QL muscle REALLY tightened up. Today, however, it has really, really turned a corner and the pain is almost gone. All being well, tomorrow ot Thursday will be pain-free. I plan to leave it so I have 2 or 3 days of no pain before trying a VERY short run. The plan is just 1/2 mile or so, if that's good, then 1.5-2 miles. If that's good then I think I'm "good to go".
Why was I getting rib pain if it was a QL muscle strain....? QL has attachment to 12th rib. Unfortunately my colleague has been self-isolating so 2 weeks so haven't been able to get any treatment![frown](/inc/images/frown.gif)

So hopefully I'll be back to running by the end of the week. 3 weeks off is going to hurt but I know I can get back to it soon enough!

I am very fortunate to never have had an injury that's kept me from running, I would go mad I think! However I know it will happen one day! Well done for staying positive!
7 miles for me this morning in the snow, a 1 mile section was completely open to the elements and I got sooo cold.
The asics nova blast winterised are amazing in the snow, no wet cold feet at all and due to not a lot of ice the grip is fine.

Just got a 2021 London Marathon ballot result email through.
But to find out if you're successful, you have to click a link, which currently isn't working - I assume due to volume of traffic.
Anybody in?
6th attempt at getting through the ballot for me. I'm not getting my hopes up....
As expected, another disappointment. Will have to try some other avenues. But to find out if you're successful, you have to click a link, which currently isn't working - I assume due to volume of traffic.

As an aside, am I the only one that finds the 'virtual marathon' a bit of a racket?
Pay us some money to.........run a marathon distance somewhere else with none of the infrastructure of the actual London Marathon.

But we'll give you a medal!
I guess it's to promote more charity running, but it seems a very odd concept.

I was wondering if I could pick the brains of more experienced runners with regards to shin splints, if thats OK?
I started running in June last year and have really got the bug for it (my 5k has gone from 42 to 25mins), however I get bouts of chronic shin splints.
The main issue is that there (appears) to be no rhyme or reason, it seems to be totally random. I go out 3 to 4 times a week and do no more than 5k (i'd like to go on longer runs, but with the issues it seems a silly idea - I think?) and some runs are fine and others are awful for pain and I have to stop around the 2 to 3k mark.
I stretch, I foam roll, I rest but still get these god awful pains. Does anyone have any advice to offer please?
The gear I am using, these shoes https://www.adidas.co.uk/cosmic-2-shoes/B44882.htm... these insoles https://enertor.com/collections/all/products/px1-r... and a pair of compression socks from amazon.
I understand these trainers may be basic and I would have no problems spending more on a better pair but am loathed too at the moment considering the shops are shut meaning I can't go and get some face to face advice on what would suit me. So for now, it's the trusty adidas (only about 400km of use).
Welcome any comments & thoughts.![smile](/inc/images/smile.gif)
Thanks
Just to update this, thanks to everyone for their tips and advice. I changed up my foam rolling, bought some Adidas SL20s and ditched the insoles. Gave my legs a rest and got back out there. I now follow the youtube video for foam rolling my calves, I do this daily. Thank you!How are you finding the sl20?
Shoes are great, feel lighter than my old Adidas but a lot more robust and supportive. Jelled with them immediately. Thought i'd have to alternate between pairs but they've been brilliant (so far!)
