Interestingly enough, Erik Anders Lang (5 hcp) tries to break 90 at Winged Foot off the competition tees just before the US Open.

Shows just how deep that rough is.
I’d say it’s a fair bit deeper than that this week.

Pretty sure the last time the US Open was at Bethpage, Justin Timberlake played it the week after with Tony Romo and a couple of other low single figure amateurs. He shot an 88.

I managed to break 90 twice on a PGA Tour course (Mayakoba in Mexico) when I was spraying the ball everywhere off 8, so a scratch player could easily do the same on a US Open track imo.

At full tournament length, with greens running at 12 or 13 and horrible tucked pins that you can’t get anywhere near?

I think it would be a round of a lifetime to shoot 90, or close to it around Winged Foot in these conditions. Even for a scratch player.

Slightly different but equally difficult course:

Given the top amateur this year shot a 69 in his second round when it was at its hardest, doesn't seem too hard to believe to me.

That amateur is probably a +7 handicap, and plays all his tournament golf on tour layouts. He’s not getting it round in level par on a local muni! He’s one of the best amateurs in the world. A scratch player from a normal club is nowhere near that level. Not even remotely close.

Well, Bryson DeChambeau deserves the win as there are no pictures on a scorecard, but his crimes against elegance will live long in the memory.

Have there ever been two uglier swings in the last group of a major?

I love Wolfs swing.

Agree that Bryson deserves the win, the only player in the field shooting under par today.

Wolff is every bit as long as Bryson off the tee too. And doesn't take an hour to hit every shot either.

Can anyone recommend some beginner irons?

Seem to be getting the hang of the golf thing after a couple lessons now, I have been using some wilson i200 from the late 80's and lived in a shed for most of that time.

Ive seen people reccomend the Ping G5/15/20/25 series. Ive had a look at the pitting chart, at 6ft tall and wrist to floor measure of 36inches I seem to fall between a yellow/green dot and regular shaft length. Theres a couple sets around golfbidder/ebay etc.

Does anyone have any other reccomendations to look at, The ping stuff is the only thing I can really find measurements for.

Wolff does take an age to put though...

BD may not have a style to please the purist, but it’s very effective. Certainly smartened up my clutch of each ways with Paddy. The course seems to have beaten all but him into submission.

Looks to be all over now, six strokes in it so even if Bryson does a Danny Lee on the 18th he'll still win it.

You won't go far wrong with G Pings. The older ones might need re-gripping if they are still the original grips. Something often overlooked, but quite important.

Ping irons would be what most people would recommend. You can’t go wrong really. Pick up a set a few years old in good nick and you’ll get most of your money back should you ever sell them. If you buy from golf bidder you’ll pay a premium for them that you won’t recoup when you sell them on.

The lie angle can be bent on ping irons if you send them in to ping, so get something close to your correct specs and they can be adjusted for you later.

That was some display he put on, can’t fault the play or the strategy given the results. His drives are generally fairly straight given the distance he hits but he looks like he’s about to fall over half the time!

I wonder how much not having a crowd has help and hindered different players this week.

$2.25 million for the winner isn’t a bad weeks work by any stretch too. Well done to Bryson that was well worth watching.

thanks for the advice guys,

Ive found a set on gumtree, They are G25's which I think were a 2013 release, They are yellow dot which are 1.5 degree upright, My measurements put me right between yellow and green. They have graphite shafts in regular flex, I believe they are Ping TFC 189 regular flex, They are jazzy and black. I have no knowledge really on shafts or my swing speed but would put it as fairly average, Definitely not a smasher anyway.

The set is a pricier than I wanted to pay but its a 5-PW also including a Driver (Integra graph-ti), Ping G10 3 wood and an Ping i20 rescue club (23 degrees). The driver seems a bit no name but I will also be needing a 3 wood. They are up for £300, Ive seen G15 iron sets alone go for £200 on ebay so doesnt seem to bad and they look in very good condition. Anyone any opinions?

If they look in good nick then go for it. Maybe they will move on the price.

To be honest so many clubs out there it’s difficult to say which to buy. Get these, play with them and if you like it then trade them in for something else down the road.

I had a set of MacGregors, then Cobra, then a Mizuno and now playing one length Cobra F8’s

Finally seem to be getting some semblance of golfing ability back!

Had the club championships this weekend, 36 in a day!

Managed rounds of 81 and 82 l, of the backs with the course set up at its most difficult, so +3 and +4 net. Considering our clubs standard scratch is +3 normally, increasing to +5 this weekend I’ll take that.

Was good enough for a small cut, thankfully leaving me at 8.6 to keep the same playing number, but also managed to come in 4th for the day on the net and 10th overall for the gross. Considering I couldn’t swing an iron a few weeks ago and shot 100 on my last few competitions I’ll take that!

SpeckledJim recommended Ping G10s to me and I'll always be grateful to him for that. Enjoyed playing with them and sold them on to a mate who is taking up the game and he likes them too. Looked at used G25s and the other later Gs but thought they were relatively expensive compared to the G10s which can be had for as little as £100 a set - and they'll still be worth that when you move on to your next set.

Played East Sussex National on Sunday/Monday.

West Course on Sunday for the Captains Cup competiton, I got 35 points and the win resulting in a 2 shot cut down to 21. I'm still struggling to get off the tee with anything higher than a 6 iron but once I get that mojo back I hope to get down to 18 hcp. Short game was really good.

East Course on Monday with quite a hangover was a team game and I tried/failed with driver and 3 hybrid for came in with a lowly 23 points.

All in all a good venue for a weekend break and good prep for Turkey next month.
