I didn’t watch it this year as I’m out of the country, but the arena format has pissed me off for years.

It was so much better when it was in a studio filled with sportsmen and sportswomen only. Then it was an audience of sporting peers and you got the impression that they loved being able to meet and mix with so many that they would never normally cross paths with.

Most of all it showed the huge respect afforded to each other in a much more intimate way.

Well this year it was in a BBC studio in Salford, no public. The shift from a weekend to. Wednesday (because of the World Cup so unavoidable to be fair) and the likely obvious winners just sucked any life out of it. The random clip format killed it altogether - maybe they can show 20second clips as they would on a news bulletin without paying a fee?
I’m all for women participating in sports, but the way they dominated here, there is going to need to be a campaign to get boys back into sport pretty soon.

They should just have different categories for men and women, reflecting that men's and women's sports are chalk and cheese. Boys and men vastly outnumber girls and women in sport. Which is why in sports such as women's football you get 15-0 type scorelines. TBH it's all just campaigning, ideology and deceit by the BBC.

I have not watched it for a long time, but ever since the women pay gap media exposure the BBC has basically become woman's hour in terms of sport. I have no issue with celebrating the achievements of women in sport, some of stuff they have done is astounding the last few years. But you knew what this show was likely to be about, all I kept getting on my phone was reminders that this woman has won this, this woman has won that, I realise they have achieved a lot, but for God's sake.

The only thing worth watching was Sinfield, for me his achievement put all the others, every single one into the shade.

It is a show that has become a woke dream.

Did Fitzpatrick get a mention for the US Open win?
The entire golf feature was 39 seconds. Utter joke of a 'show' these days

Only recognise 2 names and can't remember O'Sulivan doing anything particularly spectacular this year.
Ronnie won the World Championship, setting a new Crucible record of 74 wins, becoming the oldest winner. Ronnie made his first century break aged 10 and his first competitive maximum aged 15. He is the greatest snooker player of all time.
It’s not about what he did 30 years ago, it’s about what he’s done this year. All of the nominations seem to be for excelling at one event, rather than over the course of a year. I mean, Eve Muirhead, really?

However, Stokes has been pretty consistent all year round, both individually and as captain of the national team. He’d be my choice, but we all know it’s going to the footballer.
You obviously have selective vision, because you totally ignored the first part of my post.

Dave Ryding should be in the mix too.

Our first Apine Skiing gold.
You mean first World Cup victory? No gold medal for that. Still a great achievement though.

Yes, I saw that, he became world champion, a fine achievement make no mistake. But then, everyone else has done something remarkable too. What did you say about selective vision? Stokes has been doing it ever since he took over the test captaincy, which in my opinion is a greater achievement than the other nominees.

It's never been the same since it became SPOTY, rather than the older Sports Review of the Year, where the SPOTY was awarded.

I've been watching this show ever since the days when Graham Hill and Jackie Stewart used to have a chat with Murray Walker. It was pretty underwhelming, a nadir only matched when this country was so short of sports people a Canadian tennis player was elected as SPOTY

Yeah, it's pap. I don't watch it. Just came here to have another pop at Auntie, which I started doing about 10 years ago and it's been great to see the growing numbers who think the same way biggrin

It's a misnomer also as it's not about "personality" as far as I can tell. More about "best achievement". In which case the only female achievement I can think of in the past few years that would have a chance would be ER's US Open win.

Quite a backlash to the omission of various sportsmen / women.
Probably time for another channel to do their own version.

For me SPOTY lost all credibility many years ago when Andy Priaulx won three World Touring Car Championships back to back and didn't even get a mention, let alone a nomination.

To some extent, the BBC has always been a champion of what were once minority sports. Darts, snooker and show jumping were all turned into national obsessions (for a while anyway) through exposure on the BBC - and that's going back over 60 years in some cases.

In the modern TV landscape,, the BBC finds itself promoting what starts out as a minority sport and when it reaches a certain level of popularity, the sport gets poached away from them by a commercial broadcaster.

Watch what happens to women's football as it grows in popularity.

I find it quite strange to see some of the vehement condemnation of SPOTY this/every year.

Woke womens hour? The football lasses captured the attention of the country in the summer and delivered an international trophy - the first in either gender in 50+ yrs. 80,000 turned out to watch them at the final. Their coach seems to be quite decent. This seems, to me, to be something worth celebrating and consideration of being a “good thing”.

Gymnastics got more focus than normal this year as they had the v usual trifecta of Commonwealths, European and World Championships. And many medals were won, including by photogenic females. Shock, horror - publicity! Welcome to reality.

I’ve also posted my arguments for the England cricket team and Stokes. It’s not exactly news that Im a cricket geek smile
In many ways the Rocket is like Stokes, same sorts of fans for the same reason. He does the Heineken stuff.

As above. It's just ideologically motivated coverage. Not sport

Broady for me. Mostly personal choice than thinking he deserves it over the others.
