Question for runners who have had Covid. I'm 2 weeks post a mild case of covid and have done some running but wondered on other people's experience of how long people took to get back to full training/running?

I know it's different for everyone but looking for some real life experiences
When I had covid it was like the worst flu ever. It must have been about a month of recovery till I plucked the courage to run again. I pretty much had to start all over again as I went from regularly running 10 miles to struggling to run 3km without my legs and feet aching. Took me about a month to break the 5k barrier and over 2 months or so till I felt like I was really enjoying running and not just a means of exercise that I wanted to get over quickly and done with. Recently ended up completing my first half marathon.

More progress I think. Been feeling good this last week and a bit.

Good session planned today of 4x1mile off just 1:15 rest, then 3mins rest and then 1km, another few mins off and 4x30secs off 40secs rest.

I wanted to see if I could do the mile reps at 18min 5k pace (5:48) but went off conservatively and the final .4 of a mile on thr 1st rep (and 3rd) had a headwind so the splits were as follows: 5:55, 5:48, 5:46, 5:37 so under 18min pace average. The 1km was done in 3:17.

Since doing the strength work I've been far more consistent (1 niggle put me out for 4 days in the last 13-14 weeks, as opposed to injuries 2+ weeks long every 6-7 weeks). Whether the strength is helping with the speed I've no idea, but I've no doubt it's helping with consistency.

I plan to try a Parkrun in 2.5 weeks and will head off for 18min pace and see what happens.

I would LOVE to keep consistent and see if I can beat my old Parkrun best of 16:58......but that was a decade ago later this year, I'm 33 now, but without a doubt I eat more healthily and am doing strength work so we'll see what the next 6-12 months brings!

Some advice, if I may team:

I want to get back into running having completed couch to 5k a year or so ago. Will need to start at the beginning again to build the muscles back I guess. I’m 3st lighter from then so hoping to get stuck in.

I work away in the week as a HGV ‘roamer’ and as such, running around the services isn’t really an option. I was therefore thinking of buying a non electric treadmill. Costs, spec etc vary widely and therefore asking whether any of you have purchased such a machine. I can either stow (covered) behind the tractor unit or stash in the cab on the passenger side.

I’ve read that the longer the tread area the better due to stride length but I’m only 5,5” or so, so don’t need all that much.

Budget wise, thinking around the £200 mark or less if I can get away with it.

Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

Hi. tricky one, as non electric treadmills are all pretty poor in my experience. Can you leave the lorry when parked up and find a local PAYG gym or leisure centre?

3st lighter will help massively- well done.

If you've got a garmin when you park up it'll look for what routes runners in that area do , i'd do that if it's a option.

As above.... I'd definitely just prefer to run outdoors I think.

I felt sluggish on my 2x20mins threshold yesterday (6:22/mile and 6:14/mile) - second round felt a lot easier. Kept it controlled and not too hard.

12.4M run today and felt much better. 44.7M this week total. Next week I'm going to peg it back to about 40 (mainly cutting back a few miles at the following weekend) as I plan to then have some easier days before trying to see what I can do at a local Parkrun.

26K along the canal towpath yesterday.

Weirdly, for about 5K, my GPS position shifted several hundred metres south west. And last week, a whole run was shifted a couple hundred metres east.

Anyone else having more GPS glitches than normal? Garmin Forerunner 245 Music. Surprised if there was any military jamming exercises anywhere near where I run.

Ultra Trail Snowdonia on Saturday for me. The toughest course I've ever done. As tough as any of the long fell races in Cumbria (Borrowdale/Wasdale), but almost twice as far. . I was originally thinking about 8:30 was likely but the section around the Snowdon horseshoe was really tricky, especially in a chain of runners and with other walkers etc to take into consideration, pace dropped to not much more than 2 mph. I just noted on Strava my slowest mile was 29 minutes, with 1100ft of descent ! smile Picked it up again after the last check point at Pen-y-Pas and had a good climb up the pig track to Snowdon (for the second time) and run down to the finish. Total time of 9:18 for 50km.

Great day out and recommended if you're into long painful days on the hills

Yes, Brilliant. Orange tape markers about every 30 metres in the places which needed it. We were really impressed with this aspect. The sheer number of runners (600+ in the the 50k) also meant you had someone in sight at all in times as visibility was good other than on Snowdon summit first time up.

The only issue on the whole course was a stile after about 2km which meant about a 5 minute wait to get over. Apparently they asked the landowner if they could put extra temporary stiles in place but permission wasn't forthcoming

Yes, I had the same problem yesterday! My Fenix 6 also struggled to get a GPS signal to start with.

I’ve deleted the app and reinstalled it and checked that the watch has the latest software on - all seems okay now so I’ll see how I get with running later this week.

Thanks

Rob

My Saturday long run was fine (proper track and accurate in distance), but my Sunday recovery run did suffer massively from a GPS 'glitch' midway through it causing a couple of laughable world-record-time kilometers and about a 1.5k overread on what i know to have been the correct distance (Garmin FR 945). Annoyingly it also meant it didnt pick up on a couple of Strava segments that i was aiming to bag local legend on frown

A longer dog walk with Mrs C later in the afternoon also seemed to throw some oddites on the GPS track (Mrs C's Fenix 6) - wasn't sure if it was due to the heavy clouds?? I know sometimes atmospherics can cause problems.

I had a glitch on my Garmin 1030 that I use for cycling yesterday - shifted about 1km for a while then came back but not instantly - very odd!

Some advice please. Has anyone had and recovered from shin splints?

I think I may have them. I got a dull pain when on my last run last Monday on the front of my left shin. It was a dull ache/ pain. Reading about it on the internet it sounds like I have shin splints. It doesn’t hurt at all now. I did ice my shin a few nights last week. I was going to run tonight but after talking to a friend at work he thinks I should have another week off.

Any advice? Thanks

My 530 did a little wander at the start of my ride yesterday morning, and then my 245 did it in the afternoon on a walk too. Weird!

No issues with Garmin for me over the weekend. It's worth noting I use GPS + Galileo. If there was an issue with GPS but not Galileo, then that could explain why I was OK?

RE shin splints - stretching tibialis anterior will help but worth strengthening it too. As an aside, it could be footwear. My brother found he got shin pain when running in a pair of shoes, changed the shoes and it totally went away.

Mine's set to Garmin default of GPS + GLONASS. Might try GPS + Galileo if glitches persist.
