The other point with their app is getting it onto smart TVs. I connect using a htpc to my TV but lots of people prefer to use the apps inbuilt to their TV and I think many find getting the DAZN app onto that problematic.

And I've just seen DAZN have announced a two fight deal with Canelo, which will be on DAZN PPV. Just waiting now to hear they have also signed Joshua on a PPV deal for the Usyk rematch....
Love to know the pricing of the PPV seeing as we already pay a monthly - anything more than 15 quid and it will be taking the p***

But it will probably start low and then get higher very quickly and after a year or two even stuff like Chisora vs Parker will earn PPV status mad
They are talking about $80 in the US with a reduced rate of $60 for those who already subscribe.
Which tells us everything we need to know about their approach going forward. This isn't about growing monthly subscribers - it is about making a profit on the PPV buys.

They posted huge losses for the last year, they need to try and eat into that if they are going to be sold.

Except they are mainly owned by Len Blavatnik, so their losses last year are only a fraction of his wealth. He could afford to carry on losing a billion or so a year if he wanted. Probably quite a lot more, based on rate other people are putting in money.

I think it it interesting they tried US boxing rather than football as the sport to launch their app - I suspect that was a big mistake.

I might be wrong, but now they are pivoting to a traditional PPV model, I can't see how they can beat those networks like ESPN and Showtime which already have a huge subscriber base, and use the odd PPV fight as a revenue top-up rather than being their main event.

Boxing just another sport spoilt by too many players putting way to much money into it. 80 dollars for a ppv? That's just crazy.

It has been that cost for a big US PPV for ages.

Len certainly has deep pockets, but he's not going to throw good money after bad for ever. Sports rights are typically loss making, but with a big selection of output mediums and platforms it can be considered to be profitable. DAZN are a one trick pony and don't have a large enough or stable enough platform to really make it work for much longer over here in my humble opinion. The failure to buy BT Sport was a huge blow for their exit plans.

I like it! Or at least I like some of it smile

I might be wrong, but I think you are overestimating their timeframe to profitability. DAZN barely launched 5 minutes ago, so I doubt they would have imagined they would have a saleable cash cow already.

My sense is they are trying to figure out their next move. The two obvious options are i) go for a PPV model maybe lead by Joshua and Canelo ii) switch from boxing to other mainline sports as being the headline draw.

I would imagine they didn't pick football, plus whatever other sports are popular in the US, mainly because the rights fees look expensive. So I suspect boxing looked cheap. Except they overestimated the hardcore market size, just like boxnation did.

That is 60 pound in UK - who would pay that? - even the top 2% of earners would baulk at that.

People are being squeezed in 2022 from all sides, anyone trying to charge 40 pound for a PPV would be ignored, anyone trying to charge 60 would be subject to serious repercussions.

I don't live in the US, but the argument they make is that families and friends get together for a good PPV and so split the cost. So it isn't directly comparable to a UK PPV cost. Not saying that is true, but that is what they usually say.

I assume he wants Bivols belt so he will have to fight at that weight?

But as per the ring size talks with Saunders, I'm sure team Saunders will be seeking every advantage.

Without wanting to derail this thread with politics, we now have at least 3 iconic boxers one of which is a current heavyweight champion in Ukraine fighting for their country.

All their wealth and they have the guts to risk their lives. They have gone up in my estimation. But I also fear given how bad it is in Ukraine it's likely we will lose at least one of these icons.

In some ways as international figures they help draw attention to the plight of Ukraine but it's a shame it's come to this.

Imagine being a Russian soldier, running out of ammo, and finding you are gonna go hand to hand with Wlad and Vitali!!! Such a sad situation, appalled that it has come to this.
