Cor, bit slow in here consider we are two up in an away series to the "ahem" worlds best test side.....

Anyway, this has the stink of dead rubber syndrome all over it. Cook looks reasonably determined to get his 10,000 test runs and another hundred in the bag.

Hales experiment must be over now, we still need a bowler who is better than Woakes, a spinner who is better than Moeen and an opener who is better than Hales.

Compton worth sticking with. Taylor, Bairstow, Root, Stokes, Broad and Jimmy A have done pretty well this series

Mind you it is Sri Lanka next, so we probably can try a few new things

Will rain save the day?
Long way to go though. this is day three, we haven't finished out first innings yet.

Draw looks most likely, anyway we could still bowl them out for under a 100 again and win it...

Too early to anick, but a 70 odd score from Stokes would be very helpful here. Ali needs to remember they ain't picking him for his bowling.

Nope - still a draw for me. But I guess Root needs to be in a lunch and a few missing overs with some rain wouldn't go amiss.

If England reckon they are the next big thing in Test Cricket, then they need to show it, and close out these dead rubbrs with a bit of dignity.

It is this type of situation where Cook's captaincy is massively in question, he cannot motivate guys to put it in when they are a bit off the pace.

We don't really have an alternative to make captain.
I wonder if Broad might have matured into a possible now. Certainly seems less wild than a few years ago.

But yes I basically agree - not too many alternatives. I still fancy Morgan for a better run in the test side,

Compton to open with Cook, Morgan at three ?

We do need a 2 and 3. I too am not convenced Morgan really has it to make it in tests even at six, but it would give us an option on Captaincy if he did get back.

Worth sticking with Compton in my opinion, worth another go anyway.

Hales - well he isn't an opener thats for sure. But if they re juggle the order he could bat 6 maybe. No one wants to muck Root about but sooner or later he is going to play 3.

Yep will definitely take that as a result, England so much better with no Cook as captain.

Buttler, just fantastic again today. Nice to see England developing with no Broad or Anderson in attack, makes me think we have a future without those two world class bowlers.

All round decent effort. Hales looks a different player again.

Hopefully Broad will run through them ?

Bit of a sorry innings really. Still Root shows once more there is more to cricket than being a "destructive" hitter
