That did end up in its usual random / properly hilarious fashion for me again. I was sat around in the GRRC enclosure, drinking pints of white wine from one of those plastic reusable pint pots, with driver Jim ( who’s surname I can’t remember) and his chauffeur Trevor ( he wasn’t drinking pints of wine ). Then I went over to the house to watch the presentation, and it started chucking it down. I put my umbrella up, and then had Jake Hill ( the BTCC driver ) stood with me chatting away ( he’s a top bloke ). As we were heading into the house, I bumped into Travis Pastrana. I said “You’re a bit crazy, jumping out of plane butt naked with no parachute must have been fun”. “I wasn’t butt naked, I was wearing board shorts” he replied . Then I chatted to the guy who was driving the ‘Vette with his eyes and his mouth. That was astonishing. After that I ended up watching the first half of the football with an engineering company from Tamworth ( I think ) in their gazebo thing, which was totally random. Then it got insanely random ( even by my standards ). The buses and taxis back to Chichester had stopped by the time I made it out of the event, so I had to risk walking along the narrow roads around the estate ( not the first time I’ve done it though ). Getting passed by the Aston Martin team truck, followed by the Ferrari team truck was ‘interesting’ on those roads . Then a really random thing happened. A total stranger stopped his car and asked if I’d like a lift off of the back roads. He was a really nice guy ( from Lithuania apparently). Even more strangely, that isn’t actually the first time that’s happened either, a few years back someone ( who’s a PH’er I believe) who I also didn’t know until that point did a similar thing. The Lithuanian guy dropped me off by the Crematorium, and I made my way back to the hotel, in time to catch the ste shower that was the rest of the footy. As random ends to the weekend go, that will take some beating. But that’s one of the main reasons I love the events at Goodwood so much.

This. The Subaru is set up for jumps too and on rally tyres, it was rolling around. He lost time at the flint wall with a sideways slip. Compare to Olly Clark's Gobstopper which was track tuned, similar power and a fair bit quicker.
Edit: didn't stop Rod Millen doing a 45 second run in his old Tacoma with off road tyres and wallowy suspension!
I think the Rod Millen Tacoma is my favourite run I've seen in person in all 15yrs I've been going. So committed that it's the only car to make me genuinely feel like my life was in danger standing at Molecomb watching it coming past Edit: didn't stop Rod Millen doing a 45 second run in his old Tacoma with off road tyres and wallowy suspension!

My first FOS but definitely not my last. No idea what took me so long to go.
Far too much to see and do in 1 day so will definitely aim for minimum of 2 days next year.
Loved the Lotus Emira (ok, bit of a Lotus fan), but what a selection of race cars to see on the hill! It was great to be able to get up so close to the cars again in the paddock as a commoner.
Track highlights for me were the noise of the M1 Pro car, and the shoot out laps from Jake Hill and Harry King. Harry hit a bump where we were standing by the house and pretty much took off but kept his foot in! Spectacular!
Well done to Goodwood for putting on such a great event. Organisation all-round seemed brilliant and they must have had a very nerve wracking last few months given the effort and money put in to get the event on.

I hope your farmer friend manages to get a refund.
Why? It was pretty spot on, Saturday was about as wet as it predicted ( weeks ago ) it was an hour or so from being nail on head about Sunday too. We got lucky with the track of the worst of the weather on Friday, but that’s because the exact part of the South Downs where Goodwood is located can cause dead certs to miss.F20CN16 said:

Agreed. I got a sunburned yesterday, and I'm not kidding!
There’s going to be some very burnt people this morning! That overcast but bright sky is killer. I had factor 50 on, and I’m outdoors a lot, and even I caught it a bit!98elise said:

I wouldn’t trust the BBC forecast as far as I could throw it. I always listen to a long range forecast, that a farmer friend of mine pays a fair bit for. It’s never got it wrong in all the years I’ve been going, it says steady rain all weekend, with a lively storm on Sunday at about midday. Even the crappy BBC forecast says rain leading up to the weekend, meaning it will almost certainly be a mud bath.
I hope your farmer friend manages to get a refund. But then it went cold and rainy at about 5pm whilst I was in Molecomb grandstand

Mine's the Alpina B5 Touring. Glad your daughter enjoyed it, I've been many times but this is my first for a few years and nice to get back to it and 'familiar territory' for a big gathering.
Roll on next year.
Lovely motor - I read your note you had attached to the back of it :-)Roll on next year.

Obviously you didn’t notice the weather on Saturday, or stuck around long enough to see the storm last night then ( from about 17:00 onwards). Weather forecasting is not an exact science, but I prepared according to my long range, and I’m so very glad I did, as the brolly came in mighty handy.Either your definition of "spot on" is different to mine or one of us wasn't at Goodwood.

I think it probably would - they had a contemporary hillclimb car in 2003 when they had a class to celebrate an anniversary. Graeme Wight Jr was very quick (42.9) but the car was completely undergeared. The current cars are meaningfully more rapid (160+ over the finish line at Gurston!) that I''m sure an appropriately set up car with the right driver would be properly scorching. The concern might be around the actual terminal velocity that could be achieved before molecomb and at the top of the hill.
Quite possible. GW Jr's Gould had around 450bhp from its V6 all those year's ago, the modern V8s have around 700bhp. I can image 160mph + over the finish line at Goodwood, they do that at Shelsley. GR51

Me and the Kids (8 and 10) has a great time yesterday. At one point we had the Gas motorbike display going on in front of us (which was seriously impressive) while the Red arrows was doing a display in valley behind us...magic stuff
It's one of the great things about Goodwood. It's a great family day out. My wife and kids look forward to it every year.My wife and daughter love stuff like GAS, and Future Lab plus they enjoy the Drift Cars and stunt drivers. My son and I love the supercars and period F1.
Highlight for yesterday for them was the Gravity flying suit demo. It was unbelievably loud, and you were so close you could feel the wake from the jets.

Excellent. I get so many questions at events I thought it was a good idea and when we popped back to the car to drop some stuff off before getting on the tractor ride up to the rally stage there were a few reading it. Not often the home office laminator comes in useful
Amazing how much work the car has had !Not Ideal said:

Amazing how much work the car has had !The panoramic sunroof mechanism lunched itself last year and I ended up getting a whole new cassette from BMW which became a bit of a nightmare as it turned out although there is only one part number for it the internals had been modified over the years so initially it didn't fit even though it should have been a straight swap. Kevin Bird of Birds got it all sorted though in the end involving BMW UK (who themselves initially scratched their heads) and eventually moved some bits from the old to the new to make one perfectly working one that did fit. It seems nobody has ordered an old 5 series touring pano-roof from BMW stock in years hence this had not come to light before (understandably at the cost of one, as if it wasn't an Alpina it could be a very large proportion of the car value for something of that age).
My 'man maths' though says I can spend in maintenance what I would otherwise suffer in depreciation on another car as the car should hold value if in perfect condition due to rarity. I will get around to doing a 'Readers Cars' thread at some point now the world is opening up more and I can foresee some longer road trips on the horizon over the coming year. Cheers

Heidfeld's time no doubt , I was thinking more of the ID.R time of 39 seconds set in qualifying, that might be a stretch for anything that moves !
Which, I imagine, is exactly why they don't invite the 'shed built' hill climb specials. There was a lot of discussion about the Gobstopper II not being invited back in 2017 because it was upsetting the big boys who invest a lot of time, resources and money into the festival. When you look at the shootout winners going right back to 1993, the Gobstopper wins certainly don't 'fit' the theme.Jules Sunley said:
