After 10 days off with a cold I finally got out last night for a quick 15 miles on the CX bike, explored some paths along the river Medway I hadn't been down before. Lovely calm evening, not too cold, tons of wildlife out- and no other people!

Off road at night is quickly becoming my favourite type of riding biggrin

Loads of deer around at the moment, although I might just be better at spotting them. I've learned if or when they spot you, they freeze. If you stop, to try for a photo, they either bolt if you're close, or move away sedately if you are not too close. If you keep going, they stay still. I'd seen this one and her friend about 50 feet from the road, stock still. So I rode on a little, let the uphill bring me to stop, and then got ready...

Got up early for a pre-dawn lap of the trails but had a severe case of CBA, so waited till later and went with a mate who wanted to show me his new e-bike. Said e then had a tantie before left so he was left to ride his second-best bike - which is still an Ibis Ripmo - but meant he couldn’t then leave me in his dust. Just look how happy he is... biggrin

Spotted a Feeeeeeeeeeee-garo! And 968 parked next to each other. Which was nice.

And then nearly ran over this brighter who was determined not to get out of the way - Water Dragon Lizard, about 60-70cm from tip to tip...

Another great day today on the mountains here in Madeira. Tackling the mighty Ribeira Frio trail followed by the EWS Quatra Estradas. All went swimmingly until one of my riding buddies took a huge fall after a rock drop...landed on his head in a rock garden and his bike in a tree down the trail. The day was promptly cut short with a fairly urgent hospital visit (he's okay... we think).

not even close... i seriously thought he had snapped his neck while he was lying face down in the rocks, body spasming and making very odd grunting noises. massive concussion, but he'll live.

perhaps most importantly, the bike was fine as it bounced over the top of him and landing high up in a tree.

I've ridden that I think. Does go into a LH bend where the photo was taken from?

If it's what I think it is, that drop has quite a tricky landing. You need to pick your spot. I clouted a pedal on landing.

At least you got it on film. Worth framing that one.

absolutely, but to be honest, none of us would consider riding those sorts of trails without full-face helmets and body armour. his helmet did take quite a battering

he's okay though. i dropped in him this morning and he's feeling pretty sorry for himself, but we're already talking about getting back out on the trails next week (no riding for the rest of the week as there is storm coming in and anyone that has ridden in Madeira will have heard about 'Madeira ice' and will know that you really don't want to ride here in the wet if you avoid it.

Spectacular pics! Good to hear your mates OK, and that the bike’s fine too - these things are important!

Anyway, Friday morning, weekend’s nearly here...

I'm back to working 2-3 days a week in Great Yarmouth, and the pubs are shut.....so I took the bike with me and explored the countryside.

It then dawned on me that (a) I hadn't cycled anywhere without the kids since August (2) I hadn't been more than a few metres from another human for months and (3) getting time alone, to do something for me, has been very rare in Lockdown..

I felt much better after a couple of 20+km donders.
