Now, patching tubes on a ride, *that* defies logic. Just take a spare (or two), and if you must patch the things, do it at home. Insta-patches don't last, and messing around with proper patches mid-ride is a waste of life (i.e. if you're riding with others, they're likely to throttle you).

I patch mid-ride because I don't want to use both of my spares early on, then find a third puncture occurs when it gets cold/wet/dark or a combination of those things. This way I always have a patched or brand new tube ready to fit swiftly when I most need it. 'twas a lesson learned the hard way, and when it's pitch black, there's no verge or footway, and the temperature is heading toward minus °c, getting back on the road fast is vital. I've not ridden a lot with groups, but if I did I'd be reluctant to change my approach simply to satisfy peer pressure. I'm a big boy, and if I ever rode with a group who didn't want to wait for me to patch a tube, I'd happily duck out and finish the ride solo...

Ooh! A Bird Zero. Nice!I very much want one of those, but I've just bought a new road bike (Trek Emonda), so the MTB buying will be going on the back burner. As much because the garage is a mess and I cannot fit any more bikes in there as anything else. For now, I'll have to be content with road riding, and a bit of mild 'cross' stuff on my old tourer when I slap some fatter tyres onto it.
