I do really admire your commitment levels on the bike for sure. thumbup

I'd love a tread as well, but finding room for one is the biggest challenge for me though. The bike is in the office upstairs, but there isn't enough room for a tread as well. I could tidy the garage up though(one side has the car/the other side is full of crap!) and put one in there next to the car I reckon for sure.

I used to go out running, but I don't bother running anymore because I personally prefer the convenience of the Peloton bike now. I like how quick and easy it is to jump on the bike, and I mostly enjoy it when I'm on it to be fair. The music makes it for me.
We are very lucky to live in a country with lots of green spaces and very little dangerous insects/bears and other dangers. Indoor cardio exercise should be for when one is short of time, in my opinion. Not to mention running is full body, and bike alone is not.

Try to do a variety.

An update to a post I made in another thread some months back...

We've had our Peloton for coming up to a year now, and for me it's been life changing.

I'm 54, and worked in an office for 30+ years before semi-retiring July 2019. I'd done no real exercise for at least 25 years, and smoked since I was 14 (a pack a day for 35 years)... but I'm lucky in so far as I've never carried any weight (190cm & 80kg)... someone once described me as fit on the outside and fked on the inside.

My wife had done some Peloton classes whilst working in Miami and NY, loved them, and decided to order one for us for here in Spain... they aren't available here yet, so she had to buy it in the UK and then ship it down... overall, a decent financial commitment as there was £350 of shipping on top of the purchase cost.

I was skeptical... like lots of people, I've joined gyms in the past, been a couple of times and then never again... I didn't enjoy the experience and just couldn't be bothered. But I've ended up a complete Peloton convert and now have 49 weeks straight with at least 3 cycling classes a week (excl. warm ups/cool downs).

For the 1st couple of weeks I was just picking random classes based on music and instructor, but after I found the Power Zone program I did that pretty much religiously for 6 months.... 1 x 45 min PZ Max or Pro Cycling (max effort class), 1 or 2 x 60 or 90 min PZ endurance, and 1 x 20 or 30 min HITT/tabatta (max effort and preceded by an easy 30 min PZ endurance as a warm up). Now I do a mix of longer PZ endurance classes and 30 min music based classes. I also do some yoga for core strength and flexibility.

We now have a 2nd peloton (bike+) at our Uk house as well. My wife does 6 cycling classes a week, plus daily strength classes. Combined we do over well over 20 classes a week.

My fitness has improved significantly. My 1st FTP (2nd ever ride) was 198w. I then improved to 218w and my last one was 259w (a bit over 3w/kg).

When I started, my resting HR was 80. A year later (6 months of those without a cigarette) and that’s now down to 58. I feel healthier than I have done in years (possibly decades!)... just need to reduce the bottle of wine a night habit now!

The key benefit of Peloton for me has been accessibility. I don't have to think about going to the gym... getting ready, getting in the car, looking presentable, having a change of clothes for after the shower, being tied to a certain time. It sits just outside, under my covered terrace, and all I need to do is put on some shorts & shoes, grab some water and a towel and I'm good to go... I don't have to wear a shirt, or worry about the sweat pool on the floor... and I can gasp for breath and swear at myself when I'm out of the saddle in the last 30s of a HIIT class.

But there are other reasons I like it too... there's a great variety of instructors - I've got a few I like and non of them are 'cheer leaders'. There are a few good groups to join as well... I'm a member of 'the power zone pack' and there's usually a minimum of 30 other members in a ride to measure yourself against and push you on... sometimes there can be 250+... I've found the competitive side highly motivational.

I'm sure there are other ways to get a similar result, but for me at least, it's been a life changer.

Oh, and it's good value to me... I spend more on wine in a week than the monthly subscription.

That is a fair point. I do keep meaning to get out running ever now and then to be fair. I often wonder if I will be a bit quicker than I used to be with all the effort I've put into the bike too.

All the years I've been running(I'm 48 now) has started to impact my left knee though, so running has probably done me more harm than good perhaps. I've always enjoyed running though, and I used to run for the county at 1500m/cross country. Running comes easy to me and I'm lucky in that regard.

I've never been to a gym though, and that hasn't ever interested me at all. Watching folk lifting weights etc isn't really my thing, I'm sure I'd appreciate seeing the odd fit looking lady there though! biggrin

I often go to larger london parks for a few laps, which are full of very fit female runners in tiny shorts. (For the record, I am not a perv, and overtake them as soon as possible hehe).

I think with classes of any kind, including virtual, they do make you push yourself more though. Chris's story above is also lovely to hear.

I tend to not to a lot of road running, grass/trails. Although with the amount of cushioning in modern shoes, I imagine todays runners have it easier on the knees perhaps?

I do like that about the Peloton and I find that it pushes me far more than it does when I'm out running(I generally run at the same pace when I'm running).

That is one of my problems and I tend to enjoy road running more now than a do grass/trails, so that obviously doesn't help much with my knees I think.

Fantastic, thanks gangzoom. The piccies above of your workout/stats - is this a separate App or is it something that comes with the Peloton membership?
Peloton app links with the bike automatically but it also uploads up to Strava after each ride and given I still do cycle in the real world Strava integration is really good for my usage.

The bike itself also give you loads of data, probably too much, both the bike and app handle multiple accounts really easily, so my wife has all her work outs tracked totally independently of mine for the same membership.
Great, thanks again thumbup

I've just put a bid on a Bike+ on eBay so fingers crossed! I'm actually surprised how many are for sale on eBay!

^Its odd why people don't return these to Peloton for free in the first 30 days, but if you can grab a bargain whos going to complain smile.

On the aspect of safety, I very nearly regretted going out on the road bike today instead of doing a session on the Peloton.

A couple of miles from home, straight bit of road, excellent sight lines, and I ended up on the verge on the opposite side of the road after a half awake driver decides to pull out without looking or slowing down!!!

I've never seen my HR spike so quickly!!

I was actually trying to be sensible today as it was wet, so took my time on decents, stopped a few times to take in the view, this segment was the only time I was trying to push it above 20mph!! Cycling in the real world is fine but if you are trying to 'smash it', it's getting far too dangerous.

I've had some close calls on the bike, fallen off a few times, but had there been on coming traffic, the roads a tiny bit wetter, so I reacted that bit slower I suspect at best I would be A&E right now waiting for an xray at worst who knows!!!

Real world = slow scenic routes, Peloton = Proper cardio work out.

Only thing missing is feedback to peloton so you can’t see how you’re doing in a class. You pay a lot for that tho as you need their bike and £40/m subscription
There is nothing special about the hardware Peloton sell, but its the software integration that seems to work so well. Its not cheap but anyone looking at spending £2K on any kind of indoor bike am sure can afford £40/month quite easily, its more a matter of 'is it worth it'.

For our family usage I would say its 100% worth it, my wife is actually using the bike and off bike session more than me. £40/month to get both of us exercising much more before really isn't much to pay.
The interactivity is very expensive though. We have 2x £400 spin bikes and a £13/m subscription. The difference between that and £2k & £40/m is huge and not worth it IMO. The variety of content and flexibility to joking recorded classes any time works for us. We could bought the bines and full subscription but can’t see the value on ver what we have.

But that's like saying a £50k car isn't worth it compared to a £500 one, after all both gets you from A to B.

As a household we are doing cardio than ever (and without the risk of ending up like road kill smile).

If you like the Peloton bike programs, its worth trying the actual bike. I've ridden a few Watt bike setups at the gym and various other indoor bikes but the Peloton is up there with Watt bikes interms of feel.

As I've mentioned 'climbing' out of the saddle on the Peloton is actually pretty good fun, the bike actually sways like on a real bike. For us its well worth it.

Another Bike+ owner here, the big draws for me were not having to deal with st drivers (i'm in the US and the driving standard is poor) and the competitive side of it, it is good fun competing against people.

Ours get used about 15 times a week, I just do the cycling based classes while my wife does a mixture of those, yoga and meditation. It's been only positive for us.

I think so yes although some of the sensors may need adjusting/replacing for other applications. The screen is effectively an android tablet and you can side load anything on to it. It's very easy to escape the Peloton interface and access the android tablet and then you could for instance load zwift or similar on to it or any other app.

you’ll still be left with a st spin bike however,

i’m about to pull the trigger on a wattbike pro or atom, i have a wattbike kickr with one of my road bikes on it but it’s a faff switching to the misses bike if she wants to use it.

will use the kickr still for zwift racing as i think the gradient changes etc are better felt,

Why not get the kickr or tacx bike? Also suspect it won't be ages before zwift present their offering to the market either...

That said, the new atom looks nice.
