I always do my rides in the morning before I eat, just one of those 'off' (very off) days I guess. Hope I don't have too many of them though, felt awful after, well, and during tbh.
Perhaps not much carb content in meal the night before?

Either way those days will come. Many times I’ve stepped off the turbo (rare riding outside to get that feeling I’ve found, oddly) after 20 minutes if it just feels wrong.

It’s almost always fuelling related though I have found

Mixing in real life rides with ongoing PZ sessions.

Quite happy with things, pushed out a 6 min 230watts block at the end of a 45min PZ ride without dying.

Both me and my wife are averaging 1 Peloton class of somekind each day, given we're now 800days+ into ownership Peloton has us well and truly hooked smile.

Well, all my talk about doing a FTP session.

I woke up this morning and decided to do a 30 min ride, nothing very strenuous, but 20 mins in, I totally hit the wall, literally nothing left, heart rate was up, nothing in the legs.

I did manage to hold in there for the whole 30 mins, but felt terrible after.

It's the first time this has happened, just putting it down to experience, but not a great day. st happens I suppose?
As others have said I'd give your body a bit of a break I reckon.

Agree… 52 isn’t an issue… I’m 56 and have done multiple FTP’s.

You work as hard as you’re capable of working… the 1st one will likely be a bit of a trial anyway as pacing is difficult until you know what to expect. A massive part of it is mental… if you’re doing it right you’ll probably think you’re done 10 mins in… the challenge is to be able to hang on to the end. You’re likely much stronger than you realise.
Age is indeed just a number.

I'm 52, my brother is 46.

I exercise 7 days per week, usually around 15-20hrs per week. He maybe walks 4km once or twice per week.

He is 5 inches shorter, but 25kg heavier. My body fat hovers between 7% & 10%. His is well over 40%.

His RHR is 68. Mine is 42.

He struggles to walk up stairs without getting out of breath. I can do a steady Z2 ride for 4 hours with an average HR of 90-100bpm.

He couldn't get from his current state to mine overnight, but he could get there with effort. Which is what I have to do to maintain that level health & fitness.

Sounds like fuelling. Fasted training takes time to build, and is often specific to different forms of exercise, and different exertion levels.

I do my basic training rides fasted, normally one to 2 hours. On a longer ride, I'll usually leave fasted and eat at 90mins. If it's over 4 hours, I'll eat beforehand, then again at 90mins.

If I go out for a hard 60-90 min ride (i.e, ave HR over 80% of max, ave power over 80% of FTP), and don't eat beforehand, I'm feeling emptied by 30mins and need to eat to avoid bonking.

However, if I go for a run fasted, I'm often bonking by the time I get to 30mins, even if it's quite gentle.

Speaking of bonking… this was me yesterday. 30mins in to a 45min HIIT and hills I started to feel nauseous. Tried to push on through the final third, but gave up at 35 mins. Climbed off the bike and had to lie down for 10 mins.

It was a reasonably hard ride… at 30mins I was ave a bit over 230w (c.90% of FTP)… but should have been fine as HR was under control and hadn’t topped 90% of max in any interval. Almost certainly a function of nothing to eat and riding late afternoon in a humid 34*.

That’s the 4th time I’ve not finished a class in close 700 rides… 2 of those were FTPs where I just went out too hard, the other one was the 1st class after having covid.

It’s not a nice feeling laugh

Jesus, They are figures I could only dream of. Everything is pretty much double what I can achieve. I have over doubled my output since my first few rides in Feb mind you. Of course, the progression is all flattening out quite a bit now.

Strangely, I took on board some of the above and rested an extra day, I felt rougher than normal for the days after. Then did a 30 min ride and did a PB, albeit by 1 watt biglaugh

I've found a simple way to modify my FTP that takes about 5 seconds smile

The powerzone sessions are my go-to's now. I do like the variety they offer. Did Matt's latest PZ ride, 45 minutes of 30 second Z5s, 13 minutes overall in Z5/6 but much easier than the normal 3-4 minute blocks.

^^Love the mat coolhehe

Did you take your weights on holiday with you or was this all bodyweight exercise? (I actually did take a set of dumbells when we went to Center Parcs a couple of months back. My wife thought I was crazy, but when you've got a 'routine' it's good to stick to it).

Wow, v impressive stats.

I did a ride last week and had a short lived peak at >300W and was happy with that! If I'm getting over 200W (and can maintain) on an effort, that's good for me.

I've found myself more focusing on the strength training of late. Both Ben Alldis and Jermaine Johnson have released new splits, 3 and 5 day respectively. I've done both over the last couple of weeks. Both are decent. Trying to find the right balance of strength and Peloton and IRL cycling (and make sure to have a rest day). Usually on a Sat morning I'll do 15-20 miles, steady state ~ Zone 2 type cycling IRL.

I've noticed Peloton pushing the Lanebreak game of late. Not had a go. Anyone tried it?

I did lanebreak for the 1st time yesterday… it was on the Home Screen, decent music, and I just wanted a quick 20 mins after work.

Felt a bit weird with no instructor! Probably won’t do again.

End of the ride my 156 week streak popped up… 3 year anniversary of getting the bike and I’ve done at least 1 ride every week since then. Currently have 683 cycling classes, so not long to 700 milestone… might do a live class for that.

I might give it a go.

29 week streak here.

Maybe you'll get a shout out if you do a live ride for #700! shout

I think I have an addiction issue smile. 11pm-midnight ride are now becoming a thing, followed by a beer smile

The day is now planned around when I can find 45minutes for a strength, bike ride, and I'm tempted to find a way to extract our rowing machine from the building site that's our main house as its rebuilt...all because Peloton rowing classes are now accessible!!

We'll hit 1000 classes each this month, at some point long in the past I did 'worry' about justification of cost. Right now including the bike purchase and monthly subscription each work out is costing 80p. My daughter has started now to do some strength stuff, so that will help bring the cost down even more......Let the addiction grow!!!

We were only saying yesterday that it is arguably a waste of money for us really. My missus doesn't use it at all, and the most I ever use it is 3 rides a week at best.

We certainly don't make the best of it like some of you do that is for sure. I do always enjoy reading about you lot who are dedicated to it though.

The vast majority will be like this so don’t feel bad.

I have been to a lot of my sons mates houses for 3 year old parties and have lost track of the amount of pelotons with dust on them. It’s an age old joke about home workout stuff that it becomes a very awkward shaped clothes horse.

I'm not sure if dedication turns into addiction that's a good thing smile.

I'm at a point where I'm literally HAVE TO do a class nearly every day, the fact I already know which class I'm doing today, and when it's going to happen, that degree of planning would be major health warning if we were talking about alcohol for example instead of Peloton!

I've had similar runs before in my 20s with going to the gym, but finances put a stop to that! Peloton makes it too easy to get the endorphin hit at home, it's not weather dependent, you don't have to travel. But there are much worse things to devlop an addiction for, and if Peloton ever does go-under it'll be one quick way to go cold-turkey smile.

So far I've managed to avoid injury which I suppose is one area Peloton classes have done really well, they give you plenty of warm up, and never push you so far beyond failure.

Not true. Peloton’s retention rate is >90%

3 rides a week is good going tbh. 12 rides for £40/month is probably still cheaper than the gym. And ultimately it's a case of doing something vs doing nothing.

My wife hasn't used it in ages, I'm the only one.

I'm defo not as motivated as you! Am trying to establish something sustainable in the long term. It's pretty difficult to get motivated to do a class after +12hrs at work.

As mentioned in previous posts, I'm trying to keep up with Ben's 3 day strength split and try and do a couple of 20-30 mins bike classes in the week as well as at least 1x IRL longer Zone 2 cycle (typically Sat or Sun). (I've still not done the FTP test).

25 miles today

Retention as in still paying per month? That I can believe is at 90%. I suppose similar thing like gyms where people get excited in Jan and then motivation drops off a cliff.
