Where's that? It looks fun.I was eyeing up my MTB today. But in the end I took the drop bar Cannondale Backroads out on the Old Shaftesbury Drove from Salisbury to where it meets the A30 a couple of miles east of Shaftesbury. I thought I might need the 'bounce' provided by the HeadShok, but apart from a few patches of squishy mud and a few puddles here and there I could even have got away with a road bike, so smooth was the gravel on the byway/drover's road.

Hindhead/Devils Punch Bowl, on the North side down towards Hanckley Common
Cheers for the reply. I used to pass through Hindhead and the Punch Bowl fairly regularly, but always on my road bike. Since they put the A3 in the tunnel it has been a nice place to ride, and to stop at the NT cafe. I rode through on the old A3 once, around the top of the bowl, and vowed never to repeat that experience, but now that the road is gone it's a nice ride. Since I moved down to Bournemouth I do miss the MTBing up that way. If/when this Covid stuff dies down a bit, I think i'll stick the MTB in the car and take a trip up for old time's sake. If I do, I'll try to make time to check out Hindhead and the Surrey Hills. Is the Tamed Earth bike shop still there?yellowjack said:

Didn't realise you had moved to Bournemouth. Shaftesbury is my home town, lots of bridleway stuff to be had in the area. Bit hilly though lol. One of my favourites was Shaftesbury, Wingreen, Tollard Royal, Ashmore, Washers Pit then up to the airfield for tea and a butty. Aff to Melbury beacon into Melbury Abbas and then catch the B3081 home. Fluffsri said:

Yes, I moved down nearly 18 months ago now. We had no family connections in Farnborough, and once my boys had done the Uni thing there was nothing rooting us there. So after 20 years we upped sticks and moved down to my wife's home town so she could be closer to the care home where her mum is. I've been busy exploring Dorset (and Wiltshire/Hampshire too) by bike since the move...
Been to Shaftesbury only a couple of times, and not managed to pass the Compton Abbas airfield café in daylight hours yet, but I'm slowly, surely "colouring in" the map and having great fun doing it!

No shut quite a while ago now. Can recommend MB Cyclery just down the hill in Haslemere. If you want some routes around there just shoutPomBstard said:
Got passed by one just like this earlier today. I was going at a reasonable pace, Strava says around 35-40kmh on the flat, and this came past me like I was going backwards. No Aero Beard, though...
As for my ride, I paused to check out the sunrise over Pittwater and Scotland Island...
Definitely would have been quicker with a beard... As for my ride, I paused to check out the sunrise over Pittwater and Scotland Island...
And, cracking pic as always

Nice... Years since I've bben in that pub. We nearly bought a house in Osmotherley when we moved up here. Sat outside the Golden Lion having a beer on the darkness

A good ride is over to captain cook's monument. Cleveland way or one of the many other bridleways.
From there, there starts to become a network of mtb trails into Guisborough woods if you want to experiment with more techy stuff. Worth downloading trail forks...most are on there.
