I don't understand why people don't just go for a ride and save their money!
I think it's about taking part and being involved in a group activity. It probably dates back to tribal cooperative behaviour or something. There's much more sense of occasion about being in a large cycling event than just going out and covering the same route on your Tod.
I just did the New Forest Sportive, and I got a High 5 bottle, a huge amount of free High 5 tablets, gels, as much free food as I could cram in my face, conveniently located water-points en-route, so I didn't have to go begging in a local pub, a T-shirt I'd happily have paid a tenner for, mechanical and medical support if I'd needed it, marshaling on busy junctions, route-marking so I didn't need to keep stopping for nav, liability insurance, and whoever designed the route knew where all the quiet and scenic roads were...
All in all, worth every penny.

It's easy to scoff at these velo dandy riders in their finery, obsessing about minute details but I'd rather that than everyone going around looking a mess.
It doesn't matter how well I'm tuned out; after the second decent climb I look an utter mess. It's a gift...

Exactly. And for £30 or whatever, you get a surprising amount of free stuff.

Not as stupid as leaning your bike up against a steel pole by using the top tube! Not sure that's in the rules, just common sense. Nice mudguard!
Rule 65.I ignore that one as well. It's a bloody mountain bike. I throw it at trees and down the road on a very regular basis. The odd scrape from a pole that I lock it to is inconsequential...
