XC MTB chainset, which way to go 1x or 2x
Discussion
Please help me make up my mind! The plan of reusing the components I have here, have been shelved, as they aren't worth rebuilding /servicing at 3x9 and square taper.
I can't decide which way to go for the Inbred build! It will be used as an XC machine and round where I live its flat so can use a 1x with an 40t extender ring, and a 34t front.
However I plan on doing something nuts on it like a MTB marathon race so think a 2x could be advantagious.
Last time I spec'd a MTB chainset the only option was a 3x!
What are your thoughts?

For me, it's probably more about how much I'd be on flat, smooth paths.
I've got an old 3x9 and a new 2x10. Both give me ample gearing to get up stuff, and I'm sure a 1x11 setup could do the same. With the 2x10 though, I'll often find I've run out of gears on tarmac or flat fire trails. This isn't a problem on a trails bike, but it would be quite a pain on an XC bike.

Personally I'd go 1x.
Both of my MTB's are 1x, one is 10 speed and the other is 11 speed. Now and again I'll spin out on the road or downhill but it's rare. I've not had any problems climbing with either bike, they're both running 32t chainrings with the 10 speed having an 11-36 cassette and the 11 speed has a 10-42 cassette.
I'm not a fan of front mech's, I've never been a fan of front mech's as I can never seem to get them set up correctly.

Thats what worries me. However last time I went out on the 3x9, I monitored what gear changes I made. Whilst I was up and down the cassette, I never changed the front ring once.
Since I built the bike, I can only rememeber using the granny and big ring once each.
With a 32t front and an 11-36 on the back I've not had any problems riding in the Surrey Hills but I suppose it depends where you live.Since I built the bike, I can only rememeber using the granny and big ring once each.
1x10, my bikes have a mix of 1x10 setups (two were originally 2x10) - hard tail trail bike 32T&11/36, XC lightweight carbon 32T&11/34, AM full sus 34T&11-42T. To be honest 32T&11/36 is all that's really needed on an average do it all MTB, I don't feel I need a lower gear at all even riding places like Cwmcarn i.e. 1000m climbing in 30km
Rather than start another topic, can someone give me a pointer as to which way to go?
Ive got a F29 Cannondale with 2 x 10 setup, which after seeing how my SiL on her 1 x 11 Whyte climbed seems like a good change. Ive got Mavic Crossmax SL wheels which I understand can take an 11 speed cassette, though unsure as to whether stick with 10 and change the chainwheel or go 11 ( but means new shifter). Currently has all Shimano kit on it.
Am I right in saying I can keep the XT rear mech for 11, but do I need a chain guide or leave the front mech on?
Decisions decisions!!

I have the 1x11 Set up on my Canyon, its brilliant, went riding with my mate on Saturday who runs a 2x10 set up (Similar abilities, although I've ridden a bit more than him lately) I managed to out climb him and out sprint him with that
I've just converted my XC bike to 1x10, 34t up front with an 11-36t on the back, its pretty flat here to so I don't see the point of an extender as its not a bike I'd generally take away somewhere hilly with me - the only time I miss the bigger ring on the front is if I hit a road section during a ride which to be fair isn't often enough to worry about.
I'm also considering converting my 3rd bike to 1x10... Or maybe building another...
