Dawes Galaxy Excel 631 2017 Touring Bicycle
Discussion
My father is buying a new bike and would like to ask the PH massive :
Is the - Dawes Galaxy Excel 631 2017 Touring Bicycle - the most reliable and best value for money in the present market ?
Any input greatly appreciated, he is 75 and cycles 40-60 miles a few times a week around country lanes.

TBH if it fits and he likes the colour/style then that should be the main motivator. In this day and age he is unlikely to push any components any where near their limits and that also brings reliability. Is the - Dawes Galaxy Excel 631 2017 Touring Bicycle - the most reliable and best value for money in the present market ?

I have a 2014 Galaxy AL on which I've done over 8300km faultless miles (Although it is now heavily modified from standard spec but only because I used it as a road/'race' bike until I bought the carbon road bike)
The Galaxy will allow a relatively upright riding position, has a wide spread of gears, good quality frame and practical additions such as mudguards and a pannier rack. Due to all of these, it won't be light - one I saw reviewed was weighed at 13.4kg.
For relaxed riding where you want to keep dry and might need to carry some luggage it looks like a good option. If value is a major concern then take a look at the Spa Cycles steel tourer - it is under £1000 and has a Reynolds 725 frame.
Hope this helps.

My wife & I have Hewitt Cheviots and absolutely love them.
Even if you're nowhere near it's worth going up to Leyland and getting Paul to measure you up. He puts you on a jig and it probably takes 45 minutes.
Each bike is basically ordered to your spec. so take the price on the website as a guide. I'm sure he'd be happy downgrading some parts - I tend to get all 'child in a candy shop' and go the other way.
With my current bike I mentioned that many of the cycle routes here in Switzerland are on non-tarmacced paths. He therefore changed the wheel specification to take larger tyres.
The service is great. When I stated that I wanted something like he had built for my wife he went upstairs and came back with the original order sheet created 10 years earlier.
