It occured to me this morning that I haven't ridden my bike for nearly a month now. I went from riding 4 days a week to nothing pretty much overnight, and it's really starting to show! Need to get back out there...

For me it's the loss of commuting that's really done it.

The dark evenings are part of it, but it's also the fact that things have been manic at work lately (a lot of late evenings where I don't feel inclined to slog up the hills, clean the bike, have a shower etc.), I've often needed to carry stuff in and I currently have a moderately severe bout of man flu too.

Ironically exactly the same thing happened last year. And now it looks like the weather may be about to intervene. I don't mind the cold - in fact on the whole I prefer it to mid summer heat - but I draw the line at snow or ice when I'm sharing the hilly local roads with the white van drivers.

You lose your fitness so quick when you stop riding. Still commuting 3-4 days a week. Might need my snow tyres this week!
Tell me about it.

It becomes a vicious circle to. I'm now too out of shape to keep up if I ride with my usual MTBing friends.

Not yet, I'm on ~350 miles so far this month. We'll see how it goes when the weather gets really bad over the next couple of months though...
Ditto, was still managing 64 miles a week when it was -10 and thick with snow last year biggrin
Ironically the "Oh $41t! I'm going skiing next month..." reflex caused me to do some of my best rides during the cold snap last year. Although I never rode with snow actually settling on the tarmac I did go out with the water freezing up in my camelback tube!

Quite relieved to hear the pins and needles comment above. Being a hypochondriac of massive proportions I thought I was pushing myself to the brink of a coronary the last time that happened!
