I think videos from others of the real 'ring are better for learning the track. Sims are good, but they don't give you the 'contours' or contour change of the real thing. Vids are slightly better but the real thing IS the real thing for a reason! Just go slow and 'learn' it properly when you go or it will bite!

What puts me off most about the PS2 game is how crap the graphics look because of low resolution TVs.
(I cant play anything less than 1600x1200)
But I heard that GT4 can be played on a Hi-def TV, and as Im very close to buying one, I might check it out.
Are any of you playing it on hi-def?

I play on an XGA, LCD projector, fed through the "hi-def" adaptor with component cables. 2m wide picture, sit about 2m back.
I've tried switching the PS2 through all the screen options (1080i and 480p), likewise with the projector (which can handle all current resolutions up to 1080i), but it still shows some degree of dithering (think thats the correct term) with armco, fences, and some other trackside thingies. Can be distracting at times.
Curious if anybody out there see ABSOLUTELY no dithering/moire (armco at the Ring comes to mind as a good test), assuming they aren't playing on a 3" screen??

The picture still looks VERY good for such a large size, just a bit dissapointed that these artifacts still come through...

Did the Ring on Sunday just gone.

It was 2nd time there, so new what to expect from that.

The main thing was that the GT4 really helped to know what's coming next. Sure, you certainly can't drive it balls out like the game, but after many laps on the console, i was lapping much quicker than last time.

Having said that, it still needs plenty respect there, as the game cannot prepair you for the real life camber changes, and balls out motor cyclists !!!

Is this game any good?

Now I play alot of GTR.so Im a real sim fan.

Im sure the cars handle well, and the tuning /range of cars is amazing but....

Purely my personal opinion, but Forza Motorsport on X-box is better than GT4 on PS2. More realistic driving physics IMO.

It has the added bonus of online gaming with your mates when bladdered.

It was my first ring visit last week after spending hours learning which way the circuit went on GT4. If you are using the game to learn the circuit, you would be well advised to simply familiarise yourself with the layout of the place and land marks etc.. The braking points and line can decieve because of the extreme changes in camber, gradient and bumps in what you think are braking points or an ideal line in the game. Other obsevations are that some corners are easy flat on GT4 would put you in a box if you tried it in real life, in particular the bottom of the foxhole is not flat - as I found when I went up the hill sideways at ludicrous speed.

All in all if you learn the way the circuit goes on GT4 it will save you hours of tracktime, lots of moments and the embarressment of spending the whole time with your right indicator on. If you are an experienced driver, you will work out the places where the line differs from standard ideal on your own and be reasonably quick on your first day.

I left the circuit feeling pretty happy that I was pretty close to the pace, the knowledge that the final 10% would be bloody hard earned and that you must treat the ring with ultimate respect.... and that super bikes arn't super after all.

I was lucky enough to passenger with Ring Meister Andy Baughn for a stunning lap which was incredibly helful - any new visitors to the ring would be well advised to ask his advice before leaving. He is in love with the place and will be happy to help. Another thing that was helpful was following Sabrine in her M5 ring taxi for a lap although I would suggest that only very experienced drivers try this as the new M5 has 500bhp and Sabrine is a very quick driver.

Ahh well it was for me, but at a mere 120mph on the speedo there, that prob just a tad slower than you were going!

I have to admit - I know its flat in the Clio, but I always have a "comfort lift", in the 944 tubo, I have a slightly bigger "comfort lift"

Its the best part of the ring. 1.63G on the DL1 in the CSL there..

I'm flat through the bottom and hard on the brakes on the exit next to the rumble strip in anticipation of the next left.

In GT4 you get through by a dab and downshift only (which I would have the guts for in real life!)

just curious, how close to the left curb do you try to get at the apex? Doesn't matter too much if your in the middle, or hugging the apex at ~190kph, but at CSL speeds I imagine you must be much more precise!

Do you lap in the Rain? I've heard that on a wet NS the line through FR is significantly different than dry (like many NS curves which I am barely comfortable with in the dry!)...

cheers

Interesting.. My car is set up VERY stiff. Through the fox hole I short shift into 5th to try to keep the car settled but it is airborne quite a lot on the way down the hill. On saying that, short shifting gives me more speed and I do not want to come off of the bump settings because the car is good everywhere else. It was my first time at the ring so maybe I need to change my line at the bottom of the hill. The is a bump near the apex that unsettles the car a lot and ultimately sets off oversteer on the exit which isn't fun at 160+mph - unless you are qualifying or in someone elses car

Do the ring meisters take a different line here? Can anybody help??

Steve, unless you changed the set up of your car from Spa to the 'ring it will be way too stiff.

In the gt2 you can run flat through fox hole to the bottom left when you are in 5th, feather throttle slightly prior to turn left (in middle of track) and keep away from kerb on left (it is less bumpy then. Car is planted all the way down no hint of airborne and can only presume your car is way too stiff if you are getting airborne.

GT2 was too soft for Spa but the compliance is ideal for the 'ring.

As for following Sabine, Ring Taxi is driven well within her and car's capabilities so keeping up in a GT3rs should be childs play.

Went flat through the Foxhole in 300bhp worth of Impreza Type UK and 350Z GT4 last month and was amazed at how quickly the left hander at the top is on you. Normally I take a shedload of kerb there without thinking too much about it, but really anchored on hard going up the hill and avoided the kerb after going flat through the bottom which probably made me slower overall. Will have to finesse the compromise a little better next time...

Hi Guys

If you want to be ace on stuff like GT4, you need one of these:
www.gamepod.co.uk/
I got a GT1 in black on ebay about 8 months ago from the actual company for £170 less than the price on the manufacturers website. Its great fun, and you can buy them straight from the manufacturer for just £299 including the steering wheel and pedals.
Have a look!:

Well worth the money, and great for any driving game!!! This will certainly give you better times on GT4 as it makes you feel like you are in the game

flat up hill, dab of brakes before kerb, as roo says can take shed loads as car is light going over it and kerb is flat.
