I think the problem most drivers have with Camp is not completely down to carrying too much speed. I think it is that they try to tighten the line on exit rather than letting the car head towards the pit wall. They tug on the steering wheel as the pit wall gets closer and end up tank-slapping down the straight, off into the field, or into the pit wall.
Late apex at Camp, and let the car drift all the way out to the pit wall on exit (well, not all the way - try and avoid the green bit in front of the pit wall ).

Hard to do though. I've seen people apex too early and stuff it. Its hard to work up the commitment to really put the car into Camp on the limit and keep your foot in from the apex out given the proximity of the hard and unyielding obstacle just two feet from the edge of the track!

A bit like Woodcote at Silverstone in that respect. Do it right and the just kisses the rumble strip at fairly ludicrous velocity - but with little margin for error. I've done it "right" just the once... buttock clenching for sure...

I was managing this close without scaring the passenger too much.

I'll be there on 24th June. How do you think a Griff will handle the course? being a track beginner.

Edited to add: I HOPE IT STAYS DRY

Don't expect your Griff to be limpet like in the corners: It will, if anything like our Chimaera, be unsettled quite badly by the bumps through Folly and Avon Rise.

BUT - being as it has a more than adequate Power to Weight ratio I expect you will be able to enjoy some swift hoonery.

Have you had your brake fluid changed recently - worth doing if its old. DOT5 (best standard) fluid is what they stick in my Porker - see if there's a recommended fluid for the Griff.

Are you a track Newbie - or just a Combe newbie?

Are you sure you mean DOT5 (silicon), and not DOT 5.1 (Super DOT) as I though DOT5 was not 'normal' fluid?

The Griff had the lap record for a production car at Combe some years ago. You'll have no problem at all. If it's the TVRCC day (I think it is), grab an instructor after a session or two and he/she will show you the lines. Enjoy!

I stand corrected.

The TVRCC track day at Castle Combe is Friday 24th June... followed, of course, by the F3/GT weekend.

We (the Wilts TVRCC region) are planning on having a get together for anyone interested, in a local pub after the track day. More details closer to the time...

Cheers,

Karl

And I'll be racing there in my Ginetta as one of the support races for the F3/GT meet. Come along and say hi!

I'm there on Monday racing in the National windscreens saloons in my newly prepped E36 M3 GT (car no. 86). I shall be sporting a PistonHeads sticker somewhere on the car.

Give us a wave as I wobble round

I think the most fearsome corner is Old Paddock.. It is fast (flat out from the first chicane if you're brave), has to be taken with power (lift off at your peril) and the grassy exit rushes up to the car very fast and before you know it you can be going backwards at 100mph and the armco is 10 feet away. Quarry, Camp and Tower LOOK dangerous, Old Paddock actually IS!

Yep, you have to watch out for tons of CSL carbon fibre (and the end of an exhaust) in the grass shredding your tyres if you go off there!!!! Hehehehehe!

Angus is judging this from a chassis that even DC would say is superbly balanced! Watching his speedo, he is doing 145 before braking for Avon Rise and at least a ton over the crest whilst being on the brakes. I tried at significantly less than that (the pug maxed at 104!) and was biten by the 205. Hummmmm! We'll if the AVO adjustable stuff and some decent rubber sorts that out (famous last words!)

I would like to distance myself from (wan)Kier .

The CSL carbon Fibre IS from my car, but I was not responsible for that prang. It was someone else equally talented for car reshaping....

It's interesting how different cars take that line...in my lhd car there is no drama at all driving to the white line as it is right next to you...probably looks more scary than it feels.

Can't see those last two pics!

If it's wet, I would say avoid hitting the apex at quarry - Was there on Saturday in the rain, and there's a small dip about a yard after the apex that fills with water about two foot across. Almost everybody that touched it span out there.

If you hit the apex you could avoid it, but probably not the first time round.

I managed not to, but that was mainly down to me being deciding to go with the dry tyres before I went out, only to find that actually, yes the track was quite wet I don't have a particularly torquy car, but I couldn't put my foot down in any gear. Still it was fun sliding about at fairly low speeds
