Guys just picked up on this thread, had the same problems with own insurance company for my elise, I am with AXA and after telling me I was not covered I pointed out the exclusions on the policy did not rule out track days. so, about turn by them yes I am covered - letter to prove it. point is by my reckoning most peoples road policies should automatically cover them for track days also - doesnt matter if its a private road/track/airfield. keep pushing guys. I have also posted this point over on the British sports cars Elise bbs.
you DONT NEED expensive track cover if you are already covered!!!
Regards.

Hate to worry you, but you'll find your cover will state Public Roads which the track obviosuly isn't.

I'm covered with AON, through the MX-5 OC and they insist on advance notice for each event I do.

From my own observations I would say that the standard of track driving has been going noticebly down hill since mid-last year.

I'm not saying most people are getting worse, but more that a 'yob' element in a variety of performance cars are now coming to events and ignoring the briefings, etc, and just go out to go as fast as they can regardless of other drivers.

If my last few events had been my first few, then I probably would have given up, depsite the fact both events were with good organisors.

I think the problem is that marshalls seem too hesitant to take action against dangerous drivers (yet if you spin ...), though whether this has anything to do with financial considerations (mr. brand new Porsche 911 driver is not going to be short of a few bob, and will want to do more events recklessly) or not I do not know.

* Note - I'm not having a dig at 911 drivers, it was just the 1st performance car which came to mind, partly because one almost took my nose off at Donington a few months ago (I've never had to emergency brake on a circuit before).

Just a note to tell you all about my recent insurance renewal experiences.
I wanted to insure my standard BMW E30 M3, 1990. I wanted a fully comp policy, with trackday cover included. I was with Privilege, and paying £1750 which included cover for trackdays. Using info on these pages, I rang:
1) Adrian Flux (08700 777888) who quoted £1392 with £450 excess. This DID NOT include trackdays, and they couldn't offer a policy that did.
2) Autotorque Performance Car Insurance (0161 2785226) who wanted £2300 for cover that included trackdays, £1369 without.
3) AON (01202 760022) who wanted £2551 to include trackdays.
4) Hundreds of other "household names" who wouldn't entertain the idea of trackday cover.
5) Competition Car Insurance (0115 9415255) who wanted £80 a day for track cover for an £8000 M3 or £105 a day for a £9000 one, depending on what I wanted it insuring for. This would have been an option if I had have gone for the cheaper road only quotes.

In the end, I renewed with Privilege at a cost of £1820, which includes trackdays. I have to inform them each time I go to an event. New customers cannot get policies covering trackdays, however. This is because I am an existing customer, having been with them for 3 years, and so they will continue to cover me for trackdays. As I intend to do around 8 trackdays this year, their policy worked out best.
In conclusion, the availability of policies that cover you on the track is just hopeless. Perhaps, PetrolTed, you could keep an on-line record of insurance companies that are willing to play ball for readers of this website who enjoy trackdays?

Wow.
I thought I was being ripped off for insurance, but you guys seem to pay well over the odds. Looks like I won't be a) track daying, b) buying a TVR for some time. Shame, but your expenses sound horrendous. And some policies that exclude commuting? what's the point in that. Wish I had your dosh, or you'd see me there one day.
