I have a birthday coming up in May and all I've ever wanted is a day at a rally school - so that's what I've asked for, although I'm choosing when and where.

I've been doing some research to find out where I'd like to go, and was disappointed to see that some places, after relieving you of £200-300 for the day, only give you an hour or so in the car! I want to go somewhere with proper forest stages (not just some cones dumped on a disused airfield!) and where I can get some decent time in the car.

Does anyone have any recommendations as to where to go or where to avoid?

Recently enjoyed an excellent day with these guys.

You do a "proper" course. In the morning there are three "lectures" each followed by a practical exercise in a "play area" at the front of their loose surface stage.

In the afternoon you drive their stage at first over a known course and then a second time when you have to follow your instructors' directions as a co-driver.

Its very good fun. I learned something and thoroughly enjoyed myself - and I've done lots of trackdays and driving courses and I'm picky!

Note: They run their day with a group of 12. Two cars in use at any one time - and they have a system to ensure they never come into conflict/contact/near one another. Personally I felt one had enough time in the car and entertainment/tuition on the day for it to be well worth their £250 fee. Remember Motorsport is *expensive* and you are getting to Powerslide, Handbrake Turn, drift, donut/pendulum effect and drive a proper loose surface rally stage that they have to repair (with a tractor!) after each course (they can only run three a week). When they pop tyres (two on our day) "service" changes the wheel in about ten seconds to keep things moving and there's a spare car just in case....BARGAIN!

I've been to these guys, too, and wouldn't hesitate to recommend them to anyone else. Excellent day.

BTW, don't go anywhere that uses FWD cars unless you can left foot brake - it's an essential technique for getting FWD cars to slide properly, and if you can't do it, you'll spend most of the day concentrating on that, rather than having fun.

Not necessary. You can get it sideways quite nicely without needing to left foot brake, in fact it's positively encouraged.

various levels of rally courses from 1/2 day 'taster' to individual one 2 one. Ring Teresa up and discuss it with her.

Thanks very much for all your responses - I'll feel much happier going somewhere that's been recommended. I'm beginning to wish, however, that I'd waited until nearer the time to post my question because now I've got VERY excited about going, and I have to wait until May - I'll end up like a jack in a box!

Thanks to all of you though!
