Ring -> Hire Car -> Anyone tried it?

So the theory is, cheap flight to germany, pick up a reasonable hire car, go for a few laps to'get the feel for it', return hire car, fly home.

Anyone done anything like this or is it a mad idea?

Anyone know if german hire companies exclude a certain 'public road'?
