i know quiet a lot of night porters in hotels, nice guys bit like vampires really. one guy i know well is a night manager. hes been doing this job for 6 years (11pm-7am), before that he worked at a bp petrol station from 10pm to 6am, he did that job for two years. you can stick at it but you may end up becoming like him, slightly mole like, very pale and you soon realise that there is nothing on the internet you havent already looked at.

why not see if you can shift over to the day shift for a while or see if you can do something like two week early two weeks late.

Sounds like you are in a bit of a rut mate. So do something about it. Now. Easy for us to say it but look for another job. Good for you that you have got a job rather than being another sponger but life is about choices.
Go to your local pub, talk to people. You might be surprised that once you get a stranger talking they will tell you their life story, honestly! Talk to the women in the pub, in the supermarket, anywhere! Go get yourself a girlfriend and get some action, yes you can do it.
Get off your arse and make some positive changes in your life for the better before life passes you by.
One thing i would try and urge you to do is get some decent trainers and do some exercise/workouts, you don't have to be an athlete or musclebound roid idoit but strong mind, fit body etc.
Get out during the day and get some sunlight and fresh air in your lungs!!!
Do it fella, start tomorrow and make a difference.

Good luck.

I've not tried blackout curtains, but everything up until that, yes: blindfolds, earplugs, white noise, phone off etc, etc: none of it worked. Too hot, never managing to drift off, waking up with the daybreak on the way home etc, etc. The lack of daylight during waking hours is also tough, as silly as it sounds. You never feel "right", your skin goes all white 'n' horrible, so this, coupled with the tiredness and lack of motivation, takes it's toll.
Blackout blinds, dawn simulator alarm clock, SAD lamp and vitamin D3 supplemts taken at the start of the shift.

Choose a car, choose a job, choose a wife, choose a flat, choose to live at home, choose to do the impossible, choose daytime TV, choose your tonic, choose moments which matter, choose to sit and do nothing, choose your friends, choose a people carrier, choose to stay at home, choose music, choose washing machines, compact disk players, second-hand TVs and contraception. Choose to stay in a job you hate, or choose to go out there and find what it is you really want to do. Choose to gamble, or choose to walk away. Choose red, choose pull, choose double up, choose to cash out, choose pub, choose shots, choose to drive home. Choose an MX5, red bull, and to smash her back doors in. Choose sunshine, choose beach, choose bikinis and ice-cream.

Choose life. Grab it by the balls and see the opportunities. Choose to achieve that which people said was impossible.

Choose your future. Choose life.

^ That would make the lyrics for a great song (if it hasn't already) called 'Choose' .. though obvious omitting the references to Balls and Back Doors as i don't think that's appropriate for angst-ridden 20-somethings. Perhaps overlaid onto a Coldplay'esque 4-chord sequence (invariably in Dm). Non?

Hmmm. Forgot all about this. Somewhat rude of me given how much it helped, so again, thank you all smile

As an update: After much discussion with friends and relatives, a lot more thinking and seeing just what effect it's having (down to <4 hours sleep a day, memory gone, moods to pot, no awareness of...anything, and worrying, fell asleep on the way home last week), I've come to the conclusion that any job that makes you feel like st every waking hour (and with the lack of sleep, there's a lot!) just simply isn't worth doing. Life's too short. I came out of uni into a recession and found work once, I can do it again. It's also a bit of a dead-end job, confirmed by the manager (in slightly more words) in the 6 month review. So, with that...Ammm oot!

On a more positive note, my ideal area of work, whilst not back to full health, is picking up recruitment-wise. Applications in, interviews already. If they don't come off, I've enough cash for a visa and an open return ticket to NZ!

re. earlier questions: no commitments, thankfully.

Good luck Jimbo sounded like that job really wasn't for you, some people can hack working nights and sleep where ever whenever I know I couldn't do it.

Good for you.

I'm sure if you want an independent and constructive set of eyes over your CV then this is also a good place to continue to post or PM.

Go for it.

Well done, life is too short etc..

Throw yourself into something you have always wanted to do, play the guitar, tame lions...

Get on and enjoy life!

One final update.
Had an interview t' other day. Got the job, doing what I've wanted to do since graduation. It's all going to come crashing down soon, but right now...life is good biggrin I'm going to get heinously drunk tonight...

Brilliant news - well done

Question for all: would you sacrifice 14 hour days and general unhappiness for £80-100k year?

This might help understand whether it's just me or not....

Yes, I'd give up 14 hour work days and unhappiness in the blink of an eye and take the £80-100k a year. Or is that not what you meant? jester

It really depends on what the job is and how much I can cope. If I could deal with it, I'd continue doing it but build up a nice pot as an exit plan, putting up with the st as much as I could before Falling Down.
