I would forget the OTE advertised. Most proper sales jobs have uncapped commission and if the product is right and you are good, you can make your money.

I would always go for a phone call first to see who you are dealing with, what they do, and if there is a potential fit.

CVs, adverts and websites don't really tell you what it's like to work there in the way that even 5 or 10 minutes on the phone with a hiring manager can.

If it's an agency, again try to do as much as possible on the phone to qualify whether it is worth your time. If the agent has half a brain he will want to do exactly the same thing too. If he doesn't, you probably don't want to be registered with them.

A good rule of thumb is that all jobs advertised with an employers own logo will usually be genuine live jobs. This applies when you are being asked to send your application to an agency advert that features the employers logo (the employer will have retained the services of the agency and all applications will go through them)

In terms of knowing how genuine and OTE is, you can ask a few poignant questions:

1 - How much is the basic salary and how much is made up from commission?
2 - What are the targets?
3 - Whats the time frame for achieveing them?
4 - How many people in the company achieve 100% of their commission potential?
5 - What level do the rest achieve?

You can ask these questions to agencies and employers. A good agency will know or will ask their client on your behalf so you'll get an idea of how good the company is and what you could achieve.
