Offered a job in Afghanistan! Do I go?!
Discussion
Sorry guys I didn't realise I hadn't confirmed that I was going.
I go on the 8th of Jan as it stands, subject to the Visa and stuff being sorted. Accepted an offer on the house although the "buyer" hasn't sold theirs yet but that's now in progress and I'm actually looking forward to it. Once I get out there I'm going to spend the time knuckling down while pouring my wages into paying stuff off back home and making sure I'm in a great position if and when I do return.

Well given that I work in the same field as the OP if he did decide not to go in the end I wish he'd have popped back to this thread and told us... I'd have been there like a rat up a drainpipe lol
They've just told me that they need another tech and if I recommend someone I get a €1000 bonus if they get the job so give me a PM if you serious fancy it. TroubledSoul said:

So yeah, I made it. It's not actually too bad at all. The facilities are very good, the gym is decent, the meals are free and the food is pretty much like 3 star all inclusive type fare. One more US style food hall and one more Mediterranean style. In addition there's a Burger King and a Pizza Hut on base plus some other small restaurants and cafes.
Unfortunately I am moving elsewhere next week and have to start over again but it is what it is. Very interesting, very weird seeing people carrying weapons around, and lots of different nationalities here.
Entering via Kabul airport was... "interesting". The arrivals hall being basically a hut. The old airport terminal is now disused as it's at the side of a main road and was subject to attacks.
Next week I take my first helicopter flight when I move to the other location, which I believe is mainly British occupied.
Apologies to people who emailed me that I haven't yet responded to. I will do this week.

Good luck, OP
Cool pics, petop! (if a little scary, too!)
Helicopters out there are used as buses...literally. Just turn up, wait your turn and off you go, get off where you need. Bit hit and miss when you get on, if at all, and then if you are going for a meeting at another camp and need to return back to your home base you may end up getting stranded which is a pain to say the least!Cool pics, petop! (if a little scary, too!)
If you want scary though i have videos of doing some runs into places that when we flew out, picked up a few bullet holes into the wings!
