Indeed. What constitutes a Supercar?

If you went to a wedding with relatives you’d not seen for sometime and arrived in this

https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202009294...

On a sunny afternoon.

I’ve no doubt most guests would absolutely consider it a Supercar.

Of course in the echelons of PH it’s an entry level Sports convertible.

But it £30,000 so is that the answer?
I nearly bought a Maserati Grancabrio. Definitely not a supercar though, I'd call it a sports GT. I drove the old engine hardtop one a number of years ago and fell in love with the noise and the red interior it had. Decided I wanted one as a savings goal and started putting money into a savings account for one based on saving up £80k to get the MC version of the Grancabrio just a few years old. Long story short that money ended up funding most of our loft conversion/side extension/patio/driveway when I got together with my other half 3 years back and inherited 2 teenagers every other week.

I've since saved again (partial personal loan too as extension work not that long ago) and this year changed my previous X5 daily for a 2018 640d convertible with red leather and last year bought my Alpina B5 E61 touring so finally have a V8 and a convertible, just not in the same car! Also both added together owe me less than I was going to spend on the MGC and arguably the 640d is a 'better car' albeit without the (real) noise, but I get plenty of noise and occasion from the B5. Back to the thread topic I think to actually spend say £120k-£150k or more on a car you do need to 'earn or own' a lot of cash as I'm top level tax but wouldn't feel comfortable putting that much into one car whether or not it was fully paid for or financed.

Our household has 4 cars and 2 motorbikes and combined current values of maybe £90k and I couldn't imagine swapping all of them and adding cash just to have one toy let along needing another daily then. To have a true supercar as a toy I'd say I'd want to be earning an additional £100kpa or so.

I’d say it does
They'd think you were doing alright for sure.

But for me, its Lamborghini and Ferrari that the 'masses' would instantly know to be a supercar and one with a price tag to match. Obviously there are other brands for those in the know, but most people won't know about Pagani, or maybe even whatever McClaren have released this week that looks the same as the other with different numbers etc.

But Maserati much closer to BMW than it is Lambo.

Agree, it doesn't have the same brand value.
The BMW i8 suffers for the same reason - supercar looks but no noise/drama and the BMW badge is pedestrian.

I know it's against PH rules to care about this stuff, of course getmecoat

You'd be wrong, it isn't a supercar to anybody.

It certainly isn’t a BMW either. Maserati have been producing sports cars since 1914, arguably some of the best looking cars ever. Plus the fact they shared the same F136 engine across Ferrari and Maserati models.

Maserati is the same as Aston Martin and Porsche, they are sports cars.

Super cars are McLaren, Lambo’, Ferrari.

Luxury cars, Bentley, Rolls Royce.

Agreed. A Maserati isn't a supercar in the same way a DB9 or 911 isn't a supercar.

Absolutely, that was just generic ... 8C is a super car smile

Then you get into a 911 isn’t but a 911 Turbo is ... blah blah blah!

Surely that is hugely age dependent?

Im 28, consider myself to be in a reasonable financial position for my age but yet according to that i still shouldn't own a car and if i include my pension, i can have a £2500 car.

Maybe at 50 years old that chart may begin to apply.

First timer and probably last timer.

Two threads , this one and ‘Who has the best Garage on Pistonheads????‘

I mean , is mine bigger than yours??

1. If someone on £27k wants a Ferrari bad enough they will eventually full-fill their dream, and good luck to them.

2. If you want to have more garage’s than brain cells go ahead and fill it with cars you’ll only gaze at in their Carcoon’s and fill with Snap’s you’ll less likely use than Strap On’s.

FFS.

Why the attitude?
£27k is £1800 a month. Can you explain the circumstances by which someone on that pay can buy a Ferrari? Say a 458 for £125k. 6 years of saving every penny earned? That’s not appropriate which is the question in the OP

More garage’s than brain cells? What’s that even supposed to mean?

And you can’t really insult the intelligence of others if you’re an adult that thinks that an apostrophe means “look out, here comes the letter s.”

It’s clearly not a type either, as you’ve made the same error multiple times.

Great minds think alike, only use an apostrophe if competent. Not sure we will miss the one time poster smile
