By the bye, is 3.5% a good, bad or indifferent rise in the current climate?
depends, if you're a Banker it's appalling if you're an engineer it's exceptional. My Company has been at 2% for the last 5 yearsPossibly IT industry - gotta be careful not to fall foul of any HR restrictions on discussing payrises....

Someone is being paid to do a job, their age and family status is irrelevant.
The only relevant thing is their ability to do the job.
unless of course, you only pay mininmum wage then it's perfectly legal to pay younger people less for the doing the same job as their older colleaguesThe only relevant thing is their ability to do the job.
Under normal circumstances the 40 yo has more experience of delivering the product than the 25yo. This is fairly standard across business and industry and is usually why your senior and principle ppl are older. There is also the minor aspect that the mid 20 somethings, just out of the graduate scheme tyro know it alls are almost never as good as they think they are and generally still know fk all about actually delivering value against their job role.
Now personally I don't understand employment law or ppl/employees thinking they have any kind of rights other than to get paid some money. Work is about money, thats all. Its about whoring yourself out for as much money as is viable, everything else about work is second to that. As far as Im concerned if you don't think like that you can't complain if someone else somewhere does and therefore takes steps to earn more than you. Life isn't fair, the best you can do is try to survive most battles and cherry pick the odd fight every now and then so you bring a gun when others have brought knives. As others have alluded to on here, those situations are usually at job interview time when you can set your expectations.

Not always. It's fact that in our company staff are trained and go after contractors. Now personally I don't understand employment law or ppl/employees thinking they have any kind of rights other than to get paid some money. I moved from contractor to staff for this reason, it allows career ladder climbing. Expat packages are also very good with respect to housing, schools for kids and pension. My takehome now is half of what it was, but it's increasing and more importantly I have a fantastic pension. Being staff has other benefits like cross discipline, applying for jobs internally in different countries.
I have always discussed salary with colleagues but then we all know we are paid the same and it's very similar across the board in my trade within the industry so the real talk is how much we don't have leftover in the month.
However certain individuals with more experience in another trade within work have just found out the new guys are being offered a better deal. It's making for some good entertainment. And I can see why long term more experienced guys are getting angry about it.
The problem occurred as a small business they paid below average, as the company expands to recruit more qualified people than how we started they need to pay more but they've forgotten it seems to up the wages of the old staff and assumed people don't talk.

Well you get what you negotiate
I thought I'd done well negotiating my first salary. But turns out I am one of the lowest paid people here! Even a guy who was a complete liability with customers and got things badly wrong because he doesn't have any understanding of thermodynamics and internal combustion (whilst thinking he did) got paid more than me.
Key word there is "got" mind. We went bust. Which is when you find out all these fascinating tidbits about what people were paid. I think more than anything it showed an owner who just didn't know what he was doing. He was paying himself 270k a year whilst the company had zero money!!
