As someone with a regular job ans hours, can anyone say why aren’t shifts split into 3 rather than 2? Ie the day I split into 3. Surely that’d be easier for each individual to manage, and still the same number of man-hours for the company?
Most TOC's have less trains at night, rush hours are mornings and early evenings, so they either have earlies and lates, earlies were from 00.01 to 11.59 start lates were 12.00 to 23.59 with nights every xxxx weeks on a late shift (my last TOC did this) or they cover the work by having really early starts and very late finishes.

I had an interview with a freight company they had earlies from 00.01 to 07.59 start, middles were 08.00 to 15.59 start, lates 16.00 to 24.00

My current TOC has a late/night shift link wich anyone can go in if there is a vacancy.

Good thing about the railway is you can always swap shifts as long as its 'legal' companies don't care as long as the work is covered.

You can usually find someone to swap with permanently so you do earlies, middles or lates.

Is the late/night link well populated? Seems at my TOC earlies are the shift most in demand.

Similar to our latest start-1830 which books off at 0208. Not a bad job, though!

The nice thing about late starting lates is having the entire day to yourself without having to get up silly early.

For the interview portion if it was the same as mine they ask you 6 generic questions then expect an answer along the Situation Task Action Result model.

My advice would be to create idealised answers to the scenarios, it's what a lot of people do.

I answered based on real life experiences but it was the most painful 2hrs of my life. Part of that was because my assessor seemed as thick as two short planks and I should have made it as simple as possible for her to put a tick next to each category.

That was at DB's Doncaster assessment centre.
Mind if I fire over a few questions via PM? Had the course material come through and I've highlighted an area I may struggle in.

Best of luck!

Some more opportunities here with Greater Anglia. They're looking for trainees all over their network; https://careers.greateranglia.co.uk/departments/op...

Pay doesn't seem that good on XC. Is that a £37k maximum?

Pretty sure qualified Cross Country drivers are on around 58k, I assume the wage advertised is once you’ve completed classroom training and out handling.

As others have said the £37k will be the level you go up to once you've done the theory bit if the training.

Cross country were £65k according to last year's aslef figures.

Mine was a mix of competency based questions, "tell me about a time when xyz" and normal interview type questions, "Why do you want to be a train Driver" etc.

Research the company and what qualities a train driver should have. They were very keen in the non technical skills a driver should have, so researching these could be useful too. Good luck!
