What would you do?
Discussion
Ray, quite insightful to see that you've taken so much responsibility yet not really been paid that lucratively for the privilege, much like being an Inspector in the Police really.
Commendable that you've took the opportunity to change things, and you are going to be a Paramedic, but do expect to get the time-wasters who waste so much of the time of the Emergency Services. It is a test within itself.
Why is it that a whole host of jobs pay what is way out of sync with the responsibility or risk? For instance, infantry in the army. They get about £17k a year? On the other hand, you've got guys on rigs getting popstar wages. Not quite the same amount of risk or reward is it?
Sounds like something like tanker driver on £45k is the way to go. Relatively low responsibility, home every night/day and no-one to boss about. Anything else in the same league?

If you can afford it, then anyone should do a job they would be happy in (but key is being able to afford it)
Sorry OP I don't believe a 23 yr old (unless pro sportsman or city whizz kid) is on anywhere near £200k.
No offence, yes £200k is alot of money, but its £4000ish a week,im sure you can think of many jobs that would pay that,if not,im sure someone would help you.Sorry OP I don't believe a 23 yr old (unless pro sportsman or city whizz kid) is on anywhere near £200k.
With all respect i earn my money,i do it honestly, and in my eyes i deserve it for the job i do. I wont provide details, but i deserve it. My sister was earning just over £1000 a week when she was 21 (8 years ago) its not impossible, different jobs pay different wages, higher risks pay higher wages.
I agree 1110000% police/fire/army etc are underpaid btw.

You left the army at 21 (2yrs ago) wanted to build some log cabins but didn't have the money. Then got 2 criminal charges for fraud (albeit your fault or not) for selling cheap items on eBay, broke your hand while doing community service and then in that time have managed to sell your services for £4k per week.
I just think there would be thousands of ex-army who would have much more years experience and would find it difficult to charge so much (surely its rather 'elite')
Don't get me wrong I don't begrudge people earning as much as possible (and am all for it in every way) just smell a rat that's all. Sorry to offend.

Have to say that I'd want more than £45k for having a stonking great firework stuck to my backside every day I'm not in the same league as that chap as I had to sweat to get my degree and my job is pretty hard, technically. But I have low responsibility, don't get bossed about and earn over twice as much.
I consider myself extremely fortunate but run the risk every day of being served 1 weeks notice.
ETA: OP, job satisfaction is everything IMHO. You sound very fortunate in that you've worked hard to get where you are today and are in a position to take a risk. Enjoying work and not worrying about finances is quite a liberating thing so I'd go for it. What's the worst that could happen? Good luck either way

To put away for my Nephew... and a lad i grew up with from about 5 year old gave me the contact for the job im in now,so i guess it was a 'its not what you know its who you know' situation, yes i broke my hand, yes i have a criminal record, yes i left the army, yes i anted to join the TA(and would have but it was when the budget cuts came about and they werent enlisting til April the following year,by then things came up)... i don't see what you are hoping to achieve? do you want me to say "Dammit you got me,im lying,i spend the little spare time i have asking people i dont know and will never meet to give me advice? Lets face it, many of you think that because im "only 23" theres no possibility that i could be earning that, because ive only been doing it 2 years i couldnt be charging that,i earn my wage as i have 2 high risk clients, its a live in occupation,5 weeks on,2weeks off, if you worked 5 weeks,24 hours a time, would you not want compensating well for it?OP seems genuine enough though so I don't doubt him.

Absolutely. It was stupid to look at that or question you. Best of luck with your decision. For what it's worth my boss's brother does a similar role so I know the figures are right.Tyrewrecker said:

Hmm, in theory - but honestly, can you remember or even find a story on the internet about the last time a tanker spectacularly blew up and killed the driver? It's hardly a daily occurrence is it?Probably about as rare as, I dunno, a life-threatening accident at a Nuclear power plant (Tsunami damage doesn't count ) and I bet there's loads of maintenance and office based jobs there for far less money, no?

You sometimes see tankers flipped over or in some other road accident and I've NEVER seen one on fire or that's exploded.
£45K seems pretty good (not unfairly) for driving a lorry around and filling tanks at petrol stations.
Personally, I'd worry more about prolonged exposure to petrol fumes (and being bored to death) than the risk of explosion.
To the OP - If what you're doing doesn't make you happy and you can afford to change, do something else.
You can be a slave to money, but you can't get your life back...
Personally, though I'd think having a smaller chance of being shot at for £200K is better than having a greater one for £20K...
