Who thinks the i8 will be a success ?
Discussion
After all the initial hype of the launch of the i8 has died down.....does anyone think the car will be a success and sold in any significant numbers.
As much as I like the styling of the car......is it really a £100k car, when a new M6 can be acquired for around £75k.
Has anyone considered purchasing one ?
thanks

The car wasn't built to sell in large numbers. It was built to showcase what BMW could do with hybrid/ EV technology and therefore get people to buy in to the general idea of BMW EV cars.
However saying that, I think the car will meet and exceed BMW's sale expectations and will be seen as a success.
I would definitely consider buying one in a few years when the first 3 years deprecation is taken out of them.
PS- Should the i8 be discussed in the M power section? Or have I just opened up a can of worms and we're now going to get a Full M Car vs M Lite vs I Cars debate going.

I think comparing a hybrid showcase car with an M6 is a very curious thing to do. IMHO their only similarity is that they are cars. You buy one or the other for quite different reasons. In the end who cares if its a success for BMW, its all about showing off and selling the cars that make them margin and the i8 will help shift lots of low cost metal boxes.
Slightly different approach and I'm not sure about the i8 but when my M5 goes back I might consider a Tesla.
The S has identical performance to my M5, 350 range and is currently TAX FREE as an employee ....... no BIK (going to 5% April 15) which is still a big draw. There are also tax breaks for companies who run these as company cars.
Having had a good look around one at Goodwood this weekend it's also a lovely car inside and out.

Only up to 60mph, don't forget it is essentially 4 wheel drive so will naturally get better traction. From a roll M5 would eat it I reckon!
Noise (or lack of) is my only concern tbh.

It is a success. The whole of 2014's production is sold and there is a year long waiting list.
I put my order in for the i3 back in Oct/Nov 2013, the dealer had almost as many i8 orders as i3. As a very happy i3 owner, I would not mind seeing i8 values crash purely from a selfish perspective as I plan on buying one also but have not put an order in, suspect residuals and demand should remain good. And rather sadly (as an F10 M5 owner) it's faster than the M5 in a drag race
Tesla faster then an M5
Tesla faster then an M5
