Have never done this before. The new M3 looks awesome, carbon roof, V8 giving you better moments of inertia etc. How does it work if I pre-order one? Would any discount be feasible?

On another subject, I reckon it would cost me about £10k for a year's motoring in one, in terms of depreciation, insurance, and a few misc costs. (Not taking consumables into account.) Does that sound right?

Not a chance on discount, ordering would normally involve placing a deposit.

Thought the discount may have been a little bit hopeful. When you say I should have ordered 18 months ago, what does that mean in terms of how long to get the car from when the first one reaches the UK? Are we talking weeks, months, 18 months?

Well our name was added a couple of weeks ago to our dealers list and we are at number 12.

They have 2 cars coming late this year but don't know about further supplies beyond that.

Also - regarding a deposit, what ball park would this be in? I'm interested in when I get to choose spec too, as I want to make sure I get the SMG box.

I'm guessing anywhere between £500 and a £1,000 at this stage.

The spec hasn't been confirmed and neither for that matter has the "official" car, don't forget technically what we saw at Geneva is a concept, although probably a very very very accurate representation of the final car.

I've put £1k down as a deposit all the dealer can tell me is that i'm on the list no dates until car is launched but what i do know is that the list will be growing bigger and bigger the more info thats released.

I'm surprised the deposit is only 1-2% of the probable list price. The one thing I am dubious about is the carbon roof; I can see this not making it through to production. But everything else I want should; 400bhp NA V8, SMG, M-Diff.

Is it worth phoning around a number of different dealers to see who has got the shortest queue?

Most of the first year's supply of the M3 have already been sold (i.e. ordered against the likely allocation). When the E46 M3 came out, I remember ordering one at the motorshow launch and it still took over 2 years before my order was fulfilled. With this hindsight and if I was in your position, I would not order one but instead buy a dealer demo (of which there will be a few available) - you will be able to pick one of these up much sooner than if you joined the back of the queue.

p.s. deposit is at least £1000, but BMW are steadily increasing the minimum deposits on their most prominent M-cars to try and reduce speculative activity.

I'd like to think that if I went down to a dealer on Monday, I'd be getting a car before this time next year. Is this realistic, or are we talking past say April/May 2008?

With the E46 M3 the supply of cars was quite slow at first, so on that basis some dealers may only receive 2-3 cars in the first year, so you can understand why being 12th on the list is a bit like never-never land. Eventually supplies build up and there will be a choice of cars, but this might take a good 18 months or so. Best idea might be to ring around a few dealers and offer to buy their demo car after 3 months. I realise this might be less than ideal, it's always preferrable to spec and own your car from new but the M3 tends to be a very popular car when launched (with speculators and with customers), so the waiting period can very well be years.

I suppose the thing is, I don't to place an order for a car I want now but won't get until late next year when it's going to be "common". I'm torn between the E92 M3 and 997 GT3. The M3 seems to just be a bit more of a "bad boy" car while the GT3 is more of a precise tool.

I don't believe it will become common until 3 years or so after launch, so there's still time. But I know how painful it was to wait 2-years for my M3 and I said never again (then I waited 18 months for my CSL...doh!).

I mean within the production model year (i.e. Sept '07 to Aug '08). With previous M-cars BMW seem to intentionally restrict supply and thereby build up demand before increasing production levels. They might change this approach, but I would be surprised since it helps them maintain residuals over the anticipated 5 year model lifecycle. The higher the volume of cars to be sold then the more likely they will apply this strategy.

I would contend that it would be apt to wait until the car is launched in the UK. By that time it will have been comprehensively reviewed by all the mags and you'll know whether its worth buying. It is entirely feasible that at 20% of the 'waiting list' will drop out. I am certain you will be able to be acquire a cancelled order close to lauch or just after though spec might not be changeable.

On a personal note, I remember the E46 M3 being launched in 2001 at 16 and I did aspire to own one. Some 6yrs later, the E90 derivative has no conceivable resonance.
