Why do people put "M" badges on non-M cars?

In terms of pure snobbery, which is what this thread is about, an M235i is a superior car to a ten year old M5 (randomly picking an 'iconic' M car, popular in the M Power forum). Anyone that can afford to buy an M235i has already decided that they don't want a ten year old motor. That person would look at a ten year old M5 and think, 'get a decent motor, you loser - you are just buying an M badge so you can boast about it like a ten year old'.

My views on the badges haven't changed a bit since I got an "M",I had the same views in 1997 when I had a nova!
Badges used in the wrong way are funny to me, on all cars, not just BMW

As long as you don't look down your nose at people with M badges on their non-M cars
I thought it was laughable long before I owned an M car.steakandchips said:
just because you yourself own an M car, then, as far as I am concerned, everything is wonderful. Ten cylinder M5s and M6s are great cars to own today, as are older M3s,

I wouldn't use ownership of any of those cars as an excuse to abuse other people, which is what has been happening on this thread.
I don't see people being abused, I do see peoples use of plastic stick on badges to pretend they have something that they haven't amusing and this thread shares that humour.
See above, you'll see that posts are from lots of people but as this is the M Power forum, you have to expect people with M cars or an interest in them to post.

It's full of nonsense like "I then overtook his debadged-320d-pretend-M3 in my M3/M5/M6, bet he was really embarrassed when he saw my real M badge, the tt".
Why would you do such a thing ? If you go to the time and expense to create a fake, why not just buy the real thing ? My friend, my advice to you is that if you don't like this thread, don't read it. I personally don't read threads about how to get finance for the M135i and M235i for example. These subjects don't interest me. Why they're being discussed in the M Power section of the forum is a whole different thing.

I just looked at your profile and I now realise that you yourself own a ten year old M5. It really wasn't anything personal.

I don't take things personally, this is the internet, the sole purpose of the internet is to amuse me. It should be the same for you. Life's too short to get upset about stuff on here. People putting badges on things that they are not amuses me and clearly hundreds of people on the multitude of pages on this subject agree. Lighten up, nobody died from fitting an M badge but it is pretty funny. I just looked at your profile and I now realise that you yourself own a ten year old M5. It really wasn't anything personal.

BTW, My M5 in 9.5 (ish) years old, 7 years old when I bought it (Cash cos there wasn't any threads on here about the best deals for credit on a 7 year old M5)
If people put Ferrari badges on Fiats, I'd find that funny as well as cats chasing the light from a laser pointer.
Its the internet !!!!
Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.
If someone wants to badge their 316 as an M car then so be it. It's a bit like when I used to fit clip-ons and a Micron on my RD50 Yamaha, to try and make it look a bit more like the RD400 I lusted after. It's all pretty harmless really. I guess the M badge has just been around long enough for even those with a minimal interest in cars, to know it suggests increased kudos and performance, even if they're not entirely sure why? I mean, even Halfrauds sell their own version.

Agree Mark, but come on, you saw an E21 with an M6 badge on it, you'd do a double take !!If someone wants to badge their 316 as an M car then so be it. I would laugh if I saw an e21 with an M6 badge. It's all good fun. That said, when I got grief in the petrol station from an e46 M3 owner/driver, for ''sticking M badges and spoilers all over any old 3 series''. Even if I had explained, that mine was every bit as genuine an M car as his, I don't think he'd have believed me.
Tell me he didn't say that about your glorious e30? Jeez. The ignorance of some people. I had one back in the day and stupidly sold it to get a caterham. Had various later generations since and now a z4m but still pine for the original and best.Rather embarrassingly I stuck an alpina badge (and alpina spoiler and wheels) on an e30 325i I had. Oh dear... Not sure what that makes me!

The //M badges on cars do not bother me in the slightest, i must admit it has grown on me, I think BMW are onto a winner with it nowadays.
In regards to the 1M, BMW need to update their marketing material and start to look to include it in the M section.
What bothers me, or to be honest properly concerns me, is people that buy a 320d, then buy a M3/5/6 body kit for the best part of 5k and stick it on. Are they utterly insane?
