Why do people put "M" badges on non-M cars?

Would you believe they came from a BMW Dealership, It's an M Performance part for the 1 series.

Nope it's not, I know of two A5 diesels locally that have had RS5 front and rears put on them complete with full badging.

Looking at the brakes usually gives the game away, no matter how much M or AMG'ing has been applied.
