Why do people put "M" badges on non-M cars?

I just get asked all the time ''is it real?''. Dependent on mood I usually say 'yes', or 'no, it's a 316 with a bodykit'.
I must admit, I used to have a 316i that had been brought in from Germany and it had an M badge. It also had a few bits, like illuminated M3 gearknob and black headlining. It was all just wishful thinking and probably just not as common as it is today.

I wish they did a clear blub for the orange one they insist on putting in ruins the look of the lights. Not Guilty
