Why do people put "M" badges on non-M cars?

although, to be fair mine isn't a proper "///M" car - it did come from the BMW factory like this.. look - it even has ///M badges on the wings and brakes!! LOL!
and engine:
and steering wheel, scuff plates, dashboard and about 100 other places!! IMO BMW are as guilty of this as anyone else!.. Although, I think my F20 pre LCI 116D Sport had more M Badges now that I think of it!! LOL!
