Why do people put "M" badges on non-M cars?

Is this a term that children use in the playground? Stratstones Chesterfield have one on demo. Very nice but financial suicide to buy one, lease maybe. The standard 730 or 740 would be fine by me. I think image wise it beats any of the 5's including the M5. For pure driving pleasure if comfort is not your bag stick with a M5. The exercise programme for rear passengers using the massage seats is cool though, the wife loved it.
