Tell them you're interested.

Say you're willing to leave a £1000 deposit as a gesture of good will.

Ask them for the best deal WITH a 24 month AUC warranty thrown in.

Thanks JMdoc, basically I’ve done what you said. I’ve said I would buy it for 34k and an extra years warranty. He told me there was only a £100 off he could offer me and I walked but it wasn’t the guy I had been dealing with so we’ll see what happens when he calls me today.

I’ve tried to make sure the car is as it should be, certainly looked and felt that way. Seems to have had its running in and next service and not much else other than oil top up at 4000 miles and I spoke to an idependant service dept who told me that all as expected...don’t think there’s much else I can do. I figure they can’t sell it as AUC if it’s not appropriate for the warranty
Don't be too sure about them not selling it if it's not appropriate for the warranty, I was sold one with 3.5k miles and 12 months old that wasn't fit for warranty and had an undisclosed previous owner who had rejected it, whilst it was claimed to be an ex-BMW management car when the reg document showed a car hire company director. And this from a large national chain of BMW dealers. But don't let that put you off too much! (I got my money back as well, but some poor so and so is out there driving a dog).

Anyway, I think the response you got was that the salesman didn't think you were serious, and also probably not that keen on doing just any deal at the moment. It depends on a few things such as how much they have in the car which depends on what they sold the guy who part exed it presuming that's how they came by it. Asking about the history and where they got it is quite important. Also, if they have only got it quite recently they are usually happy to sit and wait, often for several weeks which can be hard for you if you are quite keen on it. Telling them you are willing to put a deposit down there and then if you can agree a price makes them take a bit more notice as no salesman likes to see money walk out the door if he can help it.

If you're seriously looking what you really need is an app that a guy on here developed last year when he was looking for an M5 himself and let some of us use. It was absolutely brilliant as it let you follow the market and see all the price changes. I don't suppose it's around any longer, but it was of great help to me and I suspect others on PH M5 forum. His name was Tomtom and the link below will show you an example of it if you scroll down the page.

ps Tom, if you happen to be reading this, thanks once again, a real star!

Hi all,

Thanks for all the helpful responses, in the end I spent a fair bit of time on the phone with salesman and business manager yesterday. Have put down a deposit, haggled 1.5k off the car, strangely I was told they can’t extend the warranty as it’s subject to the car being inspected again at the end of the current term but I have it in black and white that the car has been serviced to schedule and they are not aware of any mechanical issues and should it remains serviced to schedule warranty renewal won’t be a problem.

Probably could have got some more off it if I’d left them hanging longer but we liked the car and have missed a couple by waiting in the past so am happy to get it.

Well done, I would say that's a pretty good result!

Hi,

Sorry for the bump on this, collecting the car tomorrow all being well. Had a quick question, does the car have just the 2 remote keys or does it have a 3rd old style key as well? Dealers told me its just got two and wanted to be sure.

Many thanks.

Very useful thread.

I've been negotiating via email and phone calls. They didn't want to move much on price.

Hopefully, I will get the deal I want soon! I think it might be better to go down there in person.

Yeah probably best, they might not think youre that interested if you don't go down in person. I travelled from Leicester to Ascot - they knew I was interested.

I think it depends on the dealer, I negotiated the purchase of mine all by email and they were super helpful. Only time we spoke was when I needed to pay a deposit with my debit card.

However, if you have seen the specific car and your sense is that they don't want to deal by email then go and see them. I

Shopping and negotiating for the right car can be stressful at times.

Agreed to pay full asking price (something which I never do but since it ticked many boxes) but dealer didn’t want to offer one year road tax, so no deal. I have no regrets on this as I took half a day off work and drove to the dealership and even agreed to full asking price.

Sometimes you just have to stick to your principles and not bend over for the whole sales team to penetrate you.

There's a lot of variation between dealers, sometimes it's down to how much they have in the car, but sometimes it's because they're just complete muppets. The app which was mentioned earlier in this thread was really helpful because you knew how long the car had been on the market, (this can be months sometimes) and you knew how many times they had changed the price, when they changed the price, and by how much they had done this. I spent several months watching the market whilst looking for a car using this. As an illustration of how bizarre the process can be, very occasionally with a particular car after several weeks of price reduction and not selling it, they would actually but the price up. Weird.

Just saw this thread and was going to chip in with “don’t buy it if it doesn’t have head up display” but you’ve bought it already. Enjoy the car!

Just to put another slant on it (though, not to stick up for the car salesman):

Make hay while the sun shines. The full power of the M5 cannot be used for roughly half the year in the UK and if the road is even slightly damp full throttle will throw the rear end out very quickly.

Full acceleration is hugely addictive. As a result I'd be looking to buy a car asap while the weather is still good.

When I bought mine in 2013 I’m almost certain it was an option.

Just checked as I thought I must be suffering from early onset dimentia and thankfully it’s true, it was an option and they don’t all have it. So, as I was saying, don’t buy one without it.

Wow didn't realise it was an option. Good to know.
