M6: A disaster for BMW?

No, generally M3s have been pretty good until late in the product cycle. First six months after launch you can make a profit, first year you can get your money back, second year only lose 15% or so.
A different story if you bought an M3 in the last year it was made, however.

This may well be the case if you are on a list for 2 years or so which most people arent. Over 3 years most Ms lose a lot of money imo.
Stuh,
The V10 with full gruntweiller engaged is searingly rapid: the venerable V8 cannot begin to compete* - this is effectively 996 Turbo X50 poke - I'm sure My Lord of Bristol & The West will confirm.
Handling-wise, the jury is still out: the E39 is just so lazy to punt about in, that brute oversteer is an lsd-correctable 2nd gear boot away at almost any juncture.
I haven't taken quite so many liberties with the newbie but with DSC off the other day, I found the option no less open to indulge: a simply nectar laced arc of such pendular majesty that even a couple of so-called 'road safety organisations' sent me congratulatory telegrams.
* I think the older cars would certainly stay with it in P400 mode, including an E34 mit flattened anvil in said equation: what all three chassis seem to do is really 'sit down' at high levels of attack.
Only recently, a record time was noted on the North - Silverstone monthly bombing run - the E39's composure at gross lickage something to savour more than any far right, military coup (and believe me, that is one particular notion of late which renders me unduly gleeful

Your replies never dissapoint

I can feel a plan evolving....oddly a 996 X50 is the car that i was planning on getting, but the M6 is storming along on the inside rail.
I've just go one. 4 months old and saved 20 large. The more I drive it the more I love it. Once you get used to the SMG box it is a truly stunning bit of kit. Being able to cruise in luxury 1 minute and go mad the next is a great combination. I can't think of many other cars that could give you that mix and when you feel the raw performance at full thrust not much is going to make you smile more.
In terms of cost I think when they were new the price delta over the M5 was too much. Now they are very close and I would expect them to track each other.
Anyway enough of this benign waffle - time for a nice leasurely cruise to work (oops - just press that button with the M on) Missile mode has been engaged![](/inc/images/smile.gif)

Yes the E60 is a big step performance wise over the E39. 530bhp v 400bhp. Still like the manual box of the E39 though.

As for the M5/M6 v a 996TT X50, we had my X50 v Adamt's E60 at VMAX when the E60 first came out and there is nothing in it to 140mph. With the M6 being 100kg lighter, I'd expect it to be quicker. One thing though to mention is driving style. Unlike the turbo which has a very wide powerband, the E60 M5/M6 needs to be kept IMHO over 4.5k revs to give the same shove in the back that the turbo gives from 3k onwards.
Suggest driving them both before parting with cash.
O/T Welcome back to the Earl of Bolton.

An M3 bought for £40k five years ago is still worth £18k.
I'd call 45% of original value pretty d@mn good.
I'm just threating to rid myself of my E39 for the M6 as a bit of a change - I prefer the lazy seats int he M6 to the M5 ans since it will be only me in the car for 90% + of the time it seems fair to be selfish.
I prefer to be a bit camoflagued so I'll debadge it same as my current 5.
I have first refusal on a bit of a bargain so I'll think I'll snap it up provided my financiers don't mind me buying this and the AMv8 2 months ago.....gulp!
One fully loaded e39 for sale!!

Just don't be shocked by the mpg - I see in yer profile your doing 24mpg in the E39? Nearer 15 day to day in an M6 or E60 M5...
Really - I thought most E39 owners truggled to get above 20mpg - I spend my whole time on the M11 / M25 / A14 / M6 and although I do push on, it tends to be pretty gentle.
I get really rubbish mpg (probably less than 10) in the Aston since I like driving everywhere above 5k revs for the noise, preferebly at full throttle.

If in the knowledge of the M5/6 fuel economy you decide to go ahead with an M6, feel free to advertise your E39 on PH classifieds:

My average mpg is around 10 - what's the point of not 'driving' this car in P500 mode all the time.
Most of the time I'm as fast as the car in front of me - as I found out even in the Westfield, which would absolutely slaughter my M5 or an M6 down a country lane.
There are sometimes I click in and drive - then I tend to get mpg like yours, but the vast majority of my driving is luxo barge driving doing "just above" the national speed limit - same as everyone else!
So no, it doesn't (or M6 won't) get driven hard all the time - I do get overtaken sometimes, but usually by the same "drive-it-like-you-stole-it" in a Skoda of some kind on the A14, regularly doing North of 130mph.
